This level was fun to play, and I like the desert-y look to it. However, other than "desert", it doesn't really have a theme. It really just looks like Riolu180 took almost everything that looks correct with the sprite graphics used and just dispersed them here and there.

Yeah, I liked Riolu's level to the point where I decided to speedrun it (here is the vid if you care). Most of the other levels were sort of frustrating or had lame level design (I can now see why MrDeePay is giving some level 0s in level design ) but his level was short and sweet. I don't think he just threw in random desert-y enemies, they seemed to be pretty well-placed too which I believe not many people pay attention too.
BMF's level was pretty damn good too IMO. Very creative and solid level design.

I just played your level right now and to be honest, it isn't very good. The level looks very unoriginal, linear, basic and way below the standards for an LDC. It wasn't frustrating but the level design was pretty bad in my opinion. There were certain parts which weren't too bad but overall I didn't really enjoy the level.
Here's my playthrough of your level with some annotations as comments.

Hey Iceguy, I can't see the playthrough from Roberto, would you mind fixing the link. And Riolu's level looks like an original SMW level to me. A little bit boring to be honest, because it seems to be really easy.

You don't need to bounce off the Chuck to get onto the pipes at 1:05. There is an invisible Coin Block there but there's no indication of it at all.

BTW, does anyone feel like doing a playthrough of my level, Beach Cavern?

I would like someone doing a playthrough of my level as well. You might encouter a rare glitch in my entry. It's so rare, that it's not obvious at all.

I think I'll blind let's play every entry of this contest in case anyone is interested, but I'd rather wait until scores are announced so I can do it in a more organized fashion.

Right, and that is exactly the problem. He just placed an arbitrary invisible block at a pretty bad position (without any indication too as you already mentioned) for whatever reason. I don't get why people do that, they need to think from the player's perspective, not their own.
I played aj's and GeminiRage's entries and they are pretty decent. aj's entry had a great difficulty curve and the level design was pretty good to me. My only complaints (which are minor I guess) would be slowdown in some areas, some sprites not posing a threat and one area being a little bit cramped.
------
@MarioFan22: I played your level and while the level design is decent, I felt the level dragged on for too long. Also, certain areas underground felt a little bit cramped. Apart from those issues, I think your level was alright.

If I ever put invisible blocks like that in a level, I either copy the Yellow Switch outline to another page and make that act like tile 21 or put a Coin below to indicate that there is a block there.
BTW Iceguy, thanks for playing my level. I will have to try to make a shorter level in the 6th contest (that is if there is another one next year).

Really? lol. I wasn't really shooting for any specific difficulty, actually. More like "not too hard". If it feels like a level from the original SMW, I have this to say in response:
Heck yeah!

I blame the Pokey spriteset for that. Pokeys come with Sumo Bros., Volcano Lotuses, Monty Moles, and Super Koopas, most of them not exactly fitting with a desert. I was just trying to make good use of what I had, y'know?
also I'm so glad you recognized it as a desert. I was so worried people wouldn't see it that way because it doesn't scream "sand"!

Are you doing them with or without tools?

I hope you didn't thought that my opinion is "the level's easy; it sux", I just wanted to point out that I like the level, but I thought it isn't hard at all, what's a bit boring to me Yeah SMW difficult is a good description for it.
Anyways, someone wants to play my level and drop critic? Do it so by PM. I have a very specific reason why it shouldn't be posted here ;)
@mathelete does it really matter? I wouldn't care with or without tools

I thought it was kind of obvious, with the pokey-cactus graphics and the palette.
But if you were going for more of the "sand" feel, the cave graphics probably would have worked better.

Without. That's how SMW was meant to be played and how any hack should be played. However, if the levels REALLY poke my nerves (which is unlikely, I'm patient) then I'm using tools.
Anyways, I hate to ask for opinions but can anyone drop a critic for my level? It's called Forest utilities. I've been checking this thread here and there but haven't seen a comment on it. I would like to know if I did an okay job, haha.

I wasn't. If I were going for a sand feel, the BG would be different, the FG would've been cave FG, and the palette would be too bright. XD

-Attention all hardcore gamers-
I am throwing out another challenge. Basically, same as last time, beat my level without tools, but here is the catch: you have to go through door 1 (the door that you go through when you are small but don't have Yoshi). Remember, you want to make use of the hidden lives!
