The Seven Star Pieces [demo released]

Introduction:
This is my current hack. Yes, I froze my previous hack...it just wasn't working out.

This hack is to have ExGFX, custom blocks, custom sprites, custom music (though it will be inserted last so there will be more tracks), and maybe some other stuff. It also has a sort of story, it's not much, but it explains everything.

I'm trying to make my levels less short and linear (those who have played my previous hacks should know what I mean). Many levels will have multiple paths through areas, and the route is not straight.

Story:
It is said that the Star Summit is where the Stars live, and that it could decide the fate of the universe. The Star Summit could only be accessed via a gateway at Peach's Castle. Bowser, being his usual self, kidnapped Peach and went through the gateway. He then commanded the Koopalings to split the gateway into seven pieces and guard them in their castles.

How this thread will work:
Like my previous hack's thread, not only will I post updates, but I will edit my first post with the updates. This ensures that anyone who wants to view them all at once can.

Title Screen:

The text at the top has a color animation.

Level Screens:

A screen of the level "Riding in the Clouds". It will likely be the third level.

Use the Koopa to reach new heights!

Hit the multi-coin block, but don't let the platform pass.

Watch for the chainsaw...

A different level which will likely be the first level in the second world third level. It has donut lifts! :D The graphics were ripped from SMAS, but the corner tiles were tweaked due to them cutting off some corners.

There's another path to take here, which is a sort of secret.

Here, either go right...

...Or go down.

A secret path. Secrets lie behind the brick walls!

A screen of Peach's Castle. It doesn't have many enemies because it's the first level.

There are two paths to take here.

Watch out for fireballs!

A screen of the top of Peach's Castle, accessible via an alternate path.

A part with firebars. Mario's gone because he just took damage, and the screen was taken when he was flickering and invisible. D:

A screenshot of a new level, called "Peach's Garden".

Watch for Venus Fire Traps!

How do you get to the ledge?

A part with waterfalls.

What's the vine for?

...

A bit of platforming.

The castle levels will be long and filled with puzzles, instead of death traps packed with enemies. As you see, you must go up the staircase, but to get through the yellow blocks must be passable...

My, that set of staircases looks important...

How to hit the switch without trapping yourself? :O

Another small puzzle.

If you want the powerup hidden in one of the blocks, you have to avoid the Spinies! :O

A Spiny guards that passage.

Bounce off of the Koopa to reach the ledge!

Some platforming action.

There's something in that last block...

The start of a new level, called Pleasant Path. However, this path is anything but pleasant, as it's raining bob-ombs...

It's a good thing that Mario is big, so that he can get to the vine.

The green turn blocks are only solid to Mario, and they are used here as a sort of trap... :O

Sliding fun.

Now what could this be? :O

Bounce off of the Bob-omb to get up.

The Yellow Switch Palace. What does that switch do?

It made some coins appear...but also released the Koopas. Yes, it seems like a ripoff of the original one, but it's not. There's not much to do with switch palaces.

As you see, there's a lot going on in this desert level (it has Pokeys, Money Moles, Volcano Lotuses, and fireballs!).

Use the P-switch to get the Yoshi coin up there.

You need to have a Mushroom to get those.

There are various pipes scattered around. If you enter one...

...it will take you to the canyon edge! You'll need to go back and forth between the two areas to get through.

You may need to climb the canyon to find the exit.

Videos:

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/bvxtEqNektw&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/bvxtEqNektw&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
The video is slightly outdated, because I've modified it as to fix the errors that everyone has pointed out, but it's meant to show the full design.

This level will be updated soon to include more enemies, so there's no need to point that out here.

Tileset screenshots:

A desert/mountain BG tileset.

Please give comments and constructive critisism.

The All-Stars graphics are overused by now, but that's not as important as the level design, especially since the levels you've shown look very well done in my opinion. The puzzles in the castle in particular look quite creative. This is a hack I'll look forward to playing.
In my personal opinion, Super Mario World hacks are best either with their undistracting original graphics or completely custom and interesting ones. Rips from other games rarely seem to do it for me, expecially one as overdone as All-Stars. And whenever you mix Super Mario World sprites with All-Star foregrounds, it looks really... weird. They don't clash per se (unlike the terrible idea of putting Mario World sprites near SMW2: Yoshi's Island graphics), but it just feels unnatural.

By the way, are the graphics in Peach's Garden custom? I've never seen it before and it looks nice. Clashes a bit with the sprites though, probably due to outline differences (black outlines vs. colored)

Level design seems pretty good though, and in the end that's what will make or break your hack. The castle seems pretty nice, though other than that there isn't anything really eye-catching.
Yes, I agree. SOLID level design, this is... I'm blown away, even. The SMAS graphics aren't even that bad, at that. Suggestion: You can make your levels way more unique from each-other by drastically altering the palette, especially the foreground, even if several levels use similar graphics. It's still good to make most of your levels use unique graphics though. :)

My second suggestion: Info Boxes. Use them. They're SO handy. You can hide the solution for one level in another level, you can give hints on upcoming difficult obstacles, you can use them for story purposes, etcetera, etcetera. In fact, in my hack I make it a goal to fill every single slot for message boxes implemented into the game. Also, when I add them, I always make sure to use Box #2 before I use Box #1, in case I decide to use the Automatic Level Message 1 sprite (i.e. get one of the enemies to talk to Mario when he meets it).

You don't really need my advice, though. These screenies and videos completely prove to me you're one of the competent, "high-end" SMW hackers on this board. With enough hard work and effort put into this, this hack alone will earn you quite a reputation-- not just here, but in the entire Rom Hacking network! It's definitely a great goal to shoot for. Go for it, I say. :D
Wow. It looks great, even with SMAS graphics. I love the level design too. I'll be honest - I'm glad you froze your old hack. It was...Pretty boring. I'll be watching out for this!
I'm glad that you like it.

BTW, here is a userbar:

@Joshua: Yes, those are custom graphics.

That story does have some overused elements in it... Actually, I hate it.
Your screenshots amaze me. :) The hack looks great!
My only request is that you fix the foreground or background palette in Peach's Castle. It's sort of an ugly color clash otherwise.

I think he has to change the full background instead of a pallete change...

Anyway, your screens look awesome! Although they're overused, it doesn't bug me or something. I think it fits better.

Level design: It's nice. Nice design all around, but I'm not surprised about that.

Graphics: Just the common SMAS set. Nothing too special.

Plot: Kinda looks like SMRPG's, but still nice. I like it, unlike Mr Teeth.

So actually, I see nothing wrong. Keep this up and you will be able to create an awesome hack.

Oh, and make sure you have it somewhere stored on internet. You will never know if the same is gonna happen as happened to BLM. I'm looking forward to this.

Off-topic: Phew... I guess this is my longest post. YAY! :D
People these days, what's wrong with SMAS graphics unIess people make crappy hacks with them. In my opinion, SMAS graphics is even better than NSMB's. Okay, this hack seems interesting, the graphics is the author's personal choice.

Nothing, but they're overused by now.
Tileset screenshot!

It's meant to be a sandy/beach type of tileset that is used for lakes and beaches...tell me what you think!
This looks like a good hack, could use some fixing up but I'll be watching for this hack, keep up the good work.
What needs fixing up? If you don't tell me, then I can't fix it. :P
I think the BG of the room with firebars should be changed. It's just so Unfitting.
Are the ground from Peach's Garden and the sandy/beach foregrounds available anywhere? I like both.
They are not available anywhere as of now. However, when I release the first demo, I will probably release the graphics as well. :P

Time for more screenshots! It's of a lake/riverish underwater level.

At the start, you can go either left or right.

Going left results in a powerup.

Going right allows you to advance.

See the Zs? :O

Looks like I'll need a P-switch.

With this level done, this means that there are only two levels left until the first demo! :O
The sand FG looks like it should be a beach, not underwater.
I like the little fishies behind the bush. I can't see any glitches, so it looks good so far.
