Wiis are by far one of the easiest consoles to softmod; allowing you to run custom software making your Wii far more useful by actually letting it do some stuff it should have out of the box, (cough DVDs cough media player cough) emulators for several systems, custom games and tools, and the legally sketchy and unrecommended game backuping.
Definitely made my experience with the dust attractor better: it's a good media centre now.
Any other people did this to their Wii? Mine is a Q1 2008 model with a good DVD drive (good laser/supports normal DVD), GC support, and a hackable bootloader.

I haven't really used my Wii's Homebrew except for playing hacks on it, I'm looking for some good apps

I think Homebrewing your Wii for stuff like additional channels is pointless now. Seeing as the WiiU promises to do everything. Play Blu-Ray, high speed web browsing, make your dinner, make love to you, etc...
The other stuff isn't stuff I'd condone (well, perhaps the game cheats bit I'd be good with) but either way I haven't Homebrewed my Wii. Doubt I ever will.

Unless the Wii U delivers games, I don't see the need when my Wii makes a good media centre.
Still, this shit should have came with it. It's a bitching SD/DVD media player with networking support now though.
edit: wait nintendo could have made a killing here though. make a Wii Media edition - a wii with an enhanced disc drive that can read CDs (seriously, no CD support wtf), DVDs, Blu-Rays, and Wii Discs, with an enhanced motor that's quieter, faster and more powerful, bundle an enhanced WiiMC, and a slightly enhanced GPU and output, allowing for 1080p or 720p for videos and the menu only. Games would still be their shit 480p res for compatibly.

I remember when I had a White Wii from the "08" selling date marks.
When Back-up Wii & Gamecube discs could be read on 4.37GB DVD-R Cd's.
Unfortunetly, my Wii stop reading Disc's and I had to buy a new one.
So I bought a Black Wii with Mario Kart; And turns out Nintendo replaced the disc reader and DVD-R could not be read. Preventing Piracy
20 CDs wasted.
But yeah; I hacked my Wii to play Brawl+ & Custom Mario Kart Wii Tracks
I used the LetterBomb on 4.2U system.
I had alot of WADS (Virtual Consoles channels).
Emulators - where I first started playing EarthBound & Mother3 on Gba Emulators; A couple SMW hack on the SNES emulator as well as NES Hacks.
And Doom!

millieman76: I had an old wii in 08 and it still works!
I use my wii for only Mario Kart Wii custom tracks [PM me if you want to CTGP with me]. I only homebrew'd my wii once with some SMW hacks, F-Zero and MMBN roms. I stopped using homebrew because of that wii being bricked. I only use Riivolution because it is the only way to do hacks without homebrewing my Wii again

I hacked mine in order to be able to play imported games from Japan. Anything else I don't really need homebrew for.
Wish it was that simple with the Xbox 360... :S

Mine's homebrewed, mainly for emulation and cheats.

Nintendo's already said that making it play Blu-Ray is pointless and it will drive the cost up so much for something everyone already has, so they aren't putting it in.

I homebrewed my Wii a few months ago and quite enjoy it. I mostly use it for WiiMC (King of the Hill all day every day) and sometimes emulation.
Also, playing Earthbound Zero with a gamecube controller in a dark basement on a really old TV is about as good as it gets.

MVS I don't think your WiiU is going to last long. I'm pretty sure that does considerable damage to your disc drive.

Bet ya that it uses a BD-ROM drive... but we'll need homebrew to play video BD.

Which would beg the question of if Wii U is as easily hackable as Wii.

Not contributing to this quote pyramid of retardation, we can't just automatically assume because the Wii was so easy to softmod, it's younger brother will be just as easy. I'm sure Nintendo have learned from what they consider to be mistakes.

The DSi is very impervious, they've learned from their mistakes.
The Wii's IOS was actually outsourced by a company named BroadOn. Seems like they have no concept of security; the exploit holes are more gaping than goatse on the Wii.

I think we should make it a forum rule to never mention goatse. God damn it, the memories of that image. Get it away from me.
Anyway, Wii homebrew doesn't even strike me as that interesting anyway. Just a couple emulators is all I'd really care about. But even then, It's not worth the trouble.

I turned my Wii into my home media centre rather than dust attractor.
