Tip: Only use a few different kinds of enemies per level. Overdoing it can make your level feel disjointed and clunky.

New version has been released.

Previously overwhelmed by farming, goblins, and manic depressive dwarves? Well now you can have your fortress turned into vampires and werewolves, melt your dwarves in acid rain, fight undead that will never permanently die, and have clouds of ash wash over your map burning to death everything in its wake.

Still kinda buggy as it was recently released. For one, adventure mode will probably crash a lot. Also you'll want to set world gen to some low number, like 100, unless you want to wait a week for it to finish.

Oh, and for those who haven't heard of this yet, the tvtropes article explains it well. Make liberal use of the wiki if you wan to try it out; figuring out farming, military, etc without guidance is... hellish.
I tried to play this game once, it turns out I didn't have the time to sit down and figure out what was going on. It's looks nifty though.
My friend and I are Dwarf Fort fanatics, we've made about 10 self-sustainable forts each, with mist generators ect.

It's an amazing game with almost infinite possibilities and it outclasses any other game made.

And losing is fun.
I really want to understand this game, especially after reading the awesome written LP Boatmurdered. It turns out, though, that I'm having a really hard time understanding the game, but I'm going to try to sit down with the game for a few hours with the wiki open and see what I can do with it. I'm sort of intrigued by this "losing is fun" thing, especially since I hate losing work that I've already done with.

I also want to mention that the TVTropes article for this game is probably the funniest article I've ever read.

I tried Dwarf Fortress once. After hours and hours of researching, I still didn't get it.

Last week I finished my fort on a bang; I had over 200 million wealth, and not much else to do, so of course I equipped everyone with crossbows and Dug Too Deep.

Got half of the clowns, too.
