I just changed it to make it fit better into the avatar.  When it was yellow, the avatar didn't look well. ;)

I change my avatar (and "layout" if it applies and I have a fitting pic) to match whichever Touhou character my userank is currently displaying. I've been doing this since it was Komachi* and the picture is almost always a cropped version of a inappropriate picture, though none of them are pornographic in nature.
(Previously used avatars), the top Meiling one is used on another site and is 100% clean. I didn't bother with the Watatsukis (nor Reisen II, the sole 100% clean pic I've used since starting) due to a lack of fitting pics, nor PC-98 Alice because Windows Alice fit what I was looking for much easier.
I think AJ followed suit on what I do, but with humanized Pokémon.

Basically a Cottonee (Pokemon) wearing Marisa's hat from Touhou. Made this around the Time Pokemon Black/White was released and set it as my avatar a couple of months later.

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm doing, I got the idea from you. I also change my custom color to match my rankset, by the way.
Right now I'm still using a humanoid swinub (which was my previous rank) because I couldn't find any good quality images for piloswine. I kind of like this avatar anyway, so I might stick with it for a while, but I'm not sure.

Sometimes this way to look at it comes to my mind.
I've been keeping this avatar for a long while now and I still like it.
