Layer 2 rise up command's screen "limit"...is there one?

Hi guys,

So I've began a new area of Bowser's Castle using layer 2 rise up, and I was wondering, what is the maximum (if any) number of screens or number of blocks (in terms of length, e.g. since 16 blocks make up one screen) a single use of the command will allow before it loses its effect?

In this area, I have some lava that is initially off-screen (it appears around the point when it's about to stop rising), however, if the player goes a little too far, this peculiar oddity happens where it fails to rise to the height I set it at.

Anyway, if anyone here with some knowledge on this layer 2 command can help me, it'd be appreciated.
I'd bet 0F (16) screens. At one point the layer 2 Y position overflows; just move mario to another level.
