I really think we've already discussed the plan of action for the wiki, which involves "outsourcing" it to someone who's interested in running it. This used to be K3fka.

As it is, this is currently not possible due to how the current web server is set up, and thus, it must wait until I've properly configured the new one. This isn't very easy, though, because I currently have no idea how to set it up like I want, and finding information about this particular setup is also somewhat difficult. So don't give me "I'd be surprised if Kieran actually does anything" and other bullshit. I do care, but there are things that must be done first.
Sorry if I upset you with that comment, but I had no knowledge of the difficulty. I'm just saying maybe you could've told me that you would have have to deal with technical issues instead of just no replying, and I would've understood. As it stands, I'm no longer interested in running the wiki (and I've requested demotion). I think Glitch.Mr would be a fine choice for a maintainer.
And I could handle things like templates, skinning, etc.
Yes, I quite like that skin you made which matches the site's default theme.
I also want to have a constient, attractive style for other elements of the site. I'll be working on that too, once Kieran toggles a setting in the conf file...
I do believe what caused the holdup was no secret. I never meant it to be, anyway.
And the anti-spam extensions?

And the anti-spam extensions?

Sorry for the bump, but I'm supposed to be allowed to revive my own threads. And really, this is the only thing left unanswered. That, and what will be done about upgrading MediaWiki. Once that's cleared up, I think this thread can finally rest in peace.

edit: Oh, and also set this in LocalSettings.php:
Code
$wgGroupPermissions['*' ]['skipcaptcha'] = false; $wgGroupPermissions['user' ]['skipcaptcha'] = false; $wgGroupPermissions['autoconfirmed']['skipcaptcha'] = true; $wgGroupPermissions['bot' ]['skipcaptcha'] = true; // registered bots $wgGroupPermissions['sysop' ]['skipcaptcha'] = true;

and if the criteria a user has to meet to become "autoconfirmed" is still at the default (immediately after registration), set this:
Code
$wgAutoConfirmAge = 345600; // four days $wgAutoConfirmCount = 10;

I like this autoconfirmed idea, but it will probably not work well (but it would make life easier for real users). Spambots already blatantly ignore reCAPTCHA. Perhaps something like "ask some WikiMinistrator to make account in your name" would work (it seems to work on WHATWG Wiki which also dealt with spam like this before). I would also try BadBehavior, while it's not complete solution, I don't think that method used by it would annoy any real users unless their PC is full of viruses.
The issue is, some people may not be aware of who the Wikiministrator's are. Heck, I didn't know when I made my SMWiki account.

Like I said in the OP, that is why we need some new anti-spam extensions, like Asirra and SimpleAntiSpam. And as I said before, a MediaWiki upgrade would probably help, and not just with the spam.
I think I've done this CAPTCHA long time ago and even gave it to Kieran as plugin long time ago, but I'll put link again because it's deep in old thread about SMWiki.

I've took a look into my inbox and looked into Kieran's response.

I'm not sure but I think those are indeed spam bots, but there are also real persons which solve CAPTCHAs for nearly free. This CAPTCHA would deal with bots as they wouldn't see images because it doesn't have images. No images mean nothing meaningful to send.

Also, sorry for any mistakes in this message, I've used mobile phone because my PC is broken.

Well, if it's not bots, then install CheckUser and get the IP addresses of a handful or two of the spam accounts. See if they come from a particular range (meaning they all have similar IPs), such as 188.227.175.1xx, or 80.243.182.19x. I had problems with those ranges on one of my wikis. If it is a specific range and not a bunch of random ranges, then do a CIDR range block. That should stop most of the spam for the time being if it's all coming from a specific range of IPs.
I congratulate this guy on being the wiki's first actual vandal in quite a long time.

also I still haven't gotten back on upgrading MediaWiki and whatnot

Edit: Also, back when the wiki was wiped, you could've used Special:Export to export all the pages and page history, and then imported them back into the new wiki. Oh well, guess it's too late now.

Although I don't pay much attention to the wiki, I have to agree, either something massive has to be done about it or we may as well take it down entirely and stop it eating up our server space.

Thank you for that pointless post! Anyway, I've been working more on the wiki recently. I know that I earlier said that I had lost hope for the wiki, but I've since changed my mind. I also sent a PM to Kieran saying that if the offer still stands, I'd like to be the maintainer. However, he hasn't been on in over a week, so he hasn't replied.

I was asking for my question to be answered.

But it's really up to Kieran, since he's the only one with server access, and

so I'll just wait...
