Tip: Press F2 on the level editor to see sub-screen boundaries. This will help you avoid glitching Dragon Coins by putting them on the sub-screen boundaries.

This is a screenshot of the first room of the level, which is unfinished.

Nine Inch Fireballs

So yeah, this is a one level vanilla hack. I have gotten the title screen and intro done, along with the overworld. I have not yet began working on the first room of the level, so what you see in the first room in this demo will not be there once I finish making it. You can still access the other rooms. I have done the 2nd and 3rd rooms, which are transition rooms. After the 3rd room, there are 4 doors. I have not made any more stuff in the levels yet. So this is what is there so far. What is your feedback?
Okay, I have feedback.

The bowsers' mouths are cutoff, and the square I'm sitting on the overworld.

There were about 3 screens of this, and I almost couldn't make that damn jump. Lower the platforms so I can pass the jump easily.

Those climbing nets are cutoff.

Any reason of the flowers here?

I'm coming too low from the pipe here.

I can pass through those conveyor blocks here. Maybe you can use map16 to make them act like cement blocks?

Not pictured: Sometimes I get confused which side I can pass to enter the castle, but it was too easy to find out.
Here we go future hack moderators of SMWC! :D

Message Boxes really aren't the best for an intro. But this is just my opinion.

Why don't you put, eh, something here? Also your OWs are cutoffy in lots.

Too much empty area.

DAMNIT FOR THESE BORING JUMPS WHICH ARE TRYING TO MAKE ME GIVE UP.

What is that, a Yoshi eating a feather? I can see it. Maybe try to hide it or have a better idea for get a Yoshi. I'm also thinking this BG random.

These yellow thing and these conveyor aren't the best graphical choice :P

Time 0 which can cause glitch + Original level + Repeated message + Yoshi in dark BG palette = End of demo?

And damnit again for the Midway Entrance.

Well, this doesn't have anything, just the initial parts (and with some errors), so isn't technically a demo...

Ok...I got door 2 finished. A warning in advance, the difficulty is supposed to be around the difficulty of a final castle. Getting the 1-up is slightly more difficult, and you have to be balls insane to go for the 6-up secret.

Eh... I didn't liked the mushroom ledge palette, it doesn't matches with the mushroom column palette, and I don't like also the bullet bill machine palette. Try to make (perfect?) shades of red or a better red palette.
Edit: I couldn't download this hack because there was a file not found.

Okay I fixed the cutoffness.

Okay, bumping this thread. So I have two doors done. Post feedback!
Good Levels for Vanilla Hack, hehehe...
I've played through it again, and it's getting good so far, though two midway points? I think in the 2nd room you should put a mushroom or something else instead of a second midway point. Other than that I can't find a issue there, which is (good?) good.
Thanks! Also, what is your opinion on the difficulty of the levels?
Well, my opinion is that it's a bit too hard in the flying yoshi section, and that another yoshi section is not too hard.
It's too much hard for a common hack, and maybe injust. In the second door if some bullet bill touches me this is maybe the end, because Yoshi will run and fall in the lava and the munchers are there bah bah bah. And in the second part is almost the same thing. If something touches me Mario's dead by the lava. And your Map16 and graphics aren't the best definitively. Maybe you'll fit more here, you have the level design and randomness of this kind of hacker.

Anyways you're going in the right way dude. Good luck.
actually, the point of the yoshi challenges is to not get hit. That is why I made those two rooms accessible to only yoshi. It is as if you are actually playing as yoshi intead of Mario. Btw the second midway point does not actually work, since it is in another sublevel. Only the first actually works. The second is if you died, but wanted to go through doors 3 or 4, and had no other way of being big. Btw the level difficulty is meant to be that of a final castle.

Also: you directed me to the kaizo hacks forum? Don't you think that although this is hard, it is too easy to qualify as kaizo? Fyi, I DID make another hack which I put in that forum, called the Kaizo Kastle.

Okay, I have an updated version with the boss room complete.
okay, all 4 doors are complete. So that is the whole second half of the level complete.
Check the new link now.

Also, here is an image of the room you get to from door 3:

Looks nice, but you may fix the glitched P-balloon.
Well, there is no way to fix it without screwing up the lakitus. And screwed up lakitus will be much worse than a screwed up p balloon.
I don't think you need to fix the P-Balloon unless you plan to put another one somewhere away from Mario's starting position. It looks like Mario starts out on top of it, so you don't get to see its graphical glitchiness before Mario consumes the power-up. If there is another P-Balloon in there, either shorten the segment or use a hex editor to make the balloon not overlap with the Boo tile (I've never remapped tiles before, so someone correct me if I'm wrong).
using a hex editor would be automatic disqualification from the contest. Sometimes I have to deal with minor graphical errors to avoid major ones. There is that balance between graphics and the level itself. Sure I might lose 1 point in the judging for that, and possibly another point for the glitched lava trail of the podoboos in the room before th boss, but as snn would say, eh. If it helps increase my score in the design category more than it decreases my score in the graphics category, I won't complain.
Oh, this is for the contest? The fact that you posted a thread about it here kinda threw me off. I assumed it was just gonna be a one level hack you were planning to submit to the site. Well, good luck.
