Let's face it. Whenever something like Cartoon Network comes up, most people seem to dismiss anything current and immediately say something along the lines of "it was better back in the day". Generally put, people tend to say shows like Dexter's Laboratory, Powerpuff Girls, Johnny Bravo, Ed Edd n Eddy, etc. are far better than shows like The Looney Tunes Show, Adventures of Gumball, Problem Solvers, Regular Show, etc. This tends to be the same for other channels like Nickelodeon and Disney. Well I want to take a serious look at this, and see what people think of in the subject.

For me, I tend to prefer cartoons that were made in the 90s. Shows like Animaniacs, Ren & Stimpy, Ed Edd n Eddy, and so forth. Of course, I still like shows before (Hong Kong Phooey, Pink Panther) and after (Regular Show, Foster's) this time period, which can't always be said for some. I really hate it when people put down shows made now and their only argument is "the cartoons were better back then" and such, when not all cartoons were as fantastic as some say they are. And yes nostalgia definitely plays a part in all this, but I don't want to use that to tell me what's good and what's bad.

Also, for the record, theatrical animation (both movies and shorts) can be talked about as well. And while I don't see this being argued about as much, we can compare japanese animation as well.

Essentially...

1) Everyone loves their first exposure to a good piece, even if said piece really isn't all that revolutionary. Then they start getting more selective.
2) People forget the crap and only remember the good stuff.

Kids of today are going to be saying the same things 20 years from now. They'll be pointing to MLP, adventure time, regular show, etc, saying "why can't these new shows be as good as the old ones?"

If I may make a prediction...

Those shows that are old to our generation (Dexter's Lab, etc.) would be considered as bad TV by previous generations. Thus, as we consider the current TV shows to be poor, future generations shall enjoy them more than we had.

Of course, this says nothing for the quality, as that's subjective.
So what does the kids who grew up watching shows like Ben Ten think of shows like Samurai Jack?

Ether way this might explain why the only good cartoons nowadays are "lost episodes".
What about computer animation blended with cartoon animation?
You mean like, Pixar's films?
I wish they would make more Disney films using the traditional hand drawn animation instead of CGI, like Princess and the Frog. And I'm talking about something besides Winnie the Pooh. I do want to see 'The Secret World of Arietty' and the fact that it's regular animation (anime, in fact) and Disney is one reason. It would be hard to imagine CGI anime. I'm tired of all these non-Pixar Disney animated movies that are CGI. I still remember that one post I made back when corrupt-a-wish was open about wishing for a 2D animated version of Tangled.

I guess i'll give this one a try, as i already liked Adventure Time, Regular Show and Gumball.

Regarding the topic, i agree with Kai and Secret Exit.

I don't really care how it's animated, as long as the film itself is good. (and it's not incredibly ugly-looking) I always find it annoying when people criticize a film if it's CGI or it uses CGI if that's there only complaint. Sure it's used most of the time in animated films nowadays, but that's not necessarily a bad thing; it's just that's what's considered to be popular now. (also, correct me if I'm wrong, it's much cheaper than traditional animation)

And I wholeheartedly agree with Kaijyuu and TSE.
As far as computer animation goes... Kung Fu Panda and 90% of pixar's films are pretty damn incredible. And that's just what I personally have seen.

Traditional animation stuff is nice of course, but it's not inherently better or worse than anything else. A style choice, is all.
Kung Fu Panda is the best cartoon on today's Nickelodeon if you ask me and I came from an era when I was like 7 when Doug and Rugrats came out and 10 when shows on Cartoon Network like Dexter's Lab and such came out. What kind of message are today's kids getting if cartoons really aren't as good as they used to be. I mean, the majority of Nick is Spongebob

Hadn't watched Kung Fu Panda, but I think it's one of the better shows than the majotiry of the Nickelodeon shows. SpongeBob was good but it got propositally worse in latest seasons. Also, I miss the days when old cartoons used to be good...
Spongebob and Fairly Odd Parents were (or should I say are) my favorite two animated TV series. Fairly odd parents, I think... had the highest sucess rate of any show on nick other than spongebob and rugrats. Spongebob is going to reach its 200th episode by the end of the 9th season.
If we're talking about my favorite recent cartoons, here they are:
- MLP: Friendship is Magic
- Regular Show
- Adventure Time
- The Looney Tunes Show
- Thundercats (yes they have a remake and yes i liked it)
- The Amazing World of Gumball
- And Legend of Korra looks good too.

Despite that, there are HORRID recent shows like Fanboy and Chum Chum, but as Kai said, people will forget about them and remember the good ones.
