Editing Toad Tool's Source Code to Make my own Level Editor?

So yeah, recently (and by recently I mean today),I decided that I would start trying to hack Paper Mario 64, so I thought, "Wait, I don't know a thing about coding for the N64." I knew I couldn't use any of my prior knowledge of editing the SNES, so I thought of the only N64 Game Editor I knew (Toads Tool), which hacks SM64.

So I thought if I used the tool's coding as sort of a "template", it would be slightly easier.

Illegal or no?

EDIT: Yes, I know that with a game as complicated as Paper Mario it will take a large amount of time to be completed, I'm ready for that, time isn't an issue for me.

It depends, its best to ask the author and seeing if you can.

This inst entirely true, you can find similarity between them, you can even find some between SNES ASM and C++.

Also if you want to make a N64 editor, you will need to know N64 ASM.

Alright, I can try.

I'll contact the author about it tomorrow, I don't feel like editing it tonight, I guess I'll just try to learn N64 ASM for now.
I think i remember VL-Tone saying something like the program's source is a mess and it's disorganization is what preventing him from continuing it. I don't think it would be very wise to you his source.
Furthermore, I believe he's said he won't release the source. Actually, I'm kind of glad because it may motivate other people to make new editors. TT64 is a huge mess in terms of the interface, and apparently the code is too, but it's the best we've got at the moment.
Oh well. Looks like I'll have to spend a hell of a time making the coding and what not.
Maybe I can release a miniscule amount of progress during Spring C3...?

Who knows, we'll just have to wait.
If he released the source, it'd help for getting an idea of where to go. That's how I cleaned up xkas anyway.
