I just thought of something: having a system that also considers last post edits as "NEW" posts.
If that's possible...
It will make the whole double post problem eliminated, along with other shenanigans that people go through to have another post.

I usually use the edit function to fix typos or change words around, which doesn't really call for a NEW.
However if it was to be a checkbox or something at the bottom there, saying something along the lines of "Bump post", then I guess it's worth thinking over.

This is technically impossible as posts are marked read in chronological order.

I once had a system on DB of blue NEW's that shown once a person makes an edit but that was back before I reduced queries.
So it is possible but it would take a good chunk of reworking the system from Kieran. Also, it would probably be a good idea if this was implemented to have a checkbox that would decide whether or not you want to show a NEW. In addition, possibly have that NEW link to the first newly edited post you haven't seen.

Maybe it could work when you have just 25 users and less than 200 posts in total, but not when you have almost 20,000 users and almost 900,000 posts. Just think of the amount of database records it would require to keep track of all those.
Sure, yes, I know, we wouldn't keep track of ALL of those, but it would build up pretty quickly, I'm sure.

Over time records could be deleted automatically. I think the system could be somewhat like guests where NEW just disappears eventually and doesn't stick around as long, probably two/three days. It depends on how much of a burden it would be but eh. It would need to be really thought out is what I am saying. And only active users should see it to reduce the records needed.
With over 100 users and 1000 posts it wasn't as bad when I used the system but we're talking large scale so some of my ideas may need modified. So if we were to do this, we would need to have a system that keeps the records as minimal as possible. Limiting it to active users, limiting how long it stays, etc.
Edit: Another limit is the amount of NEW edits a person can have. Just throwing some ideas out there.

What if when you edit there's an option that reads something like "Show a NEW text when finishing editing the post." and maybe, maybe make it only available for the last post or something?

If someone wants to edit their post add content to it, it's normally because it's the last post in the thread. Otherwise they make a new post. Why don't we just have a visible NEW tag when somebody edits the most recent post in the thread?
E: How about we also have a NEW tag when the first post is edited to? I know a lot of hack showoff people like to update their first post with info.
