VisualBoyAdvance lags...and not very consistently at that

Okay, I'm having trouble with VisualBoyAdvance. It gives me noticeable lag when I try to play almost any game. It might just be that my computer isn't very powerful, but it can run bsnes-compatibility, Project64, and ePSXe just fine (usually). Not only that, it says 100% on the top toolbar (well, it fluctuates from about 98% to 101%). Here are the games I've tried and the results I've gotten:

Super Mario Advance: Lags, flickers, and produces annoying buzzing noises when too many sprites are on the screen ("too many" usually meaning "around 4").
SMA2: Doesn't lag that much except in places where SMW would have lagged as well, but the screen flickers a lot.
SMA3: Usually lags pretty much constantly, only letting up if there are no sprites on the screen or very few. The transitions from the map to levels also display a screen of glitched tiles briefly.
SMA4: Doesn't lag all that much, only occasionally (or it's not noticeable at all).
Donkey Kong Country, GBA version: Lags most of the time, although not quite as bad or as frequently as SMA3 (although that might have more to do with DKC games not usually having very many sprites on the screen at once).
DKC2: Lags most of the time, a little bit worse than DKC1.
DKC3: Lags most of the time, significantly worse if there's somethhing like Layer 3 water in the level.
Sonic Advance: Seems to work all right, with possible very slight lag.
Sonic Advance 3: Seems to work all right.
Mega Man Zero: Seems to work all right.
MMZ2: Seems to work all right for the most part, but that one stage with the train freezes as soon as the "Mission Start" is about to appear.
MMZ3: Seems to work all right.
MMZ4: Seems to work all right.

It's really weird what a wide range of symptoms I've gotten, but I really hope I can fix it. I've tried all four video rendering methods and setting the frame skip to 2, and none of those things seemed to make it lag any less. Does anyone know what might be causing these problems and how to fix them?
A bit late but I am just going to mention a few settings which seem to work pretty good for me.

I leave Frame Skip at 0. Anything higher seems to make it look quite choppy or laggish, at least for me. It may not be too useful but some of my settings are:
Frame Skip - 0
X4 (This makes the window around 960X639)
Synchronize - checked
Real Time clock - checked
CGB/GBC - checked

I am not too used to VBA myself but that's some things that may or may not be of interest that works for me. I hope this helps. I can PM you for further things and see what settings you have. Posting this in case it does help someone.

Edit: I do have it lag a bit sometimes while recording but that's about it.

Hm...changing the settings to what you suggested didn't help anything. Weird. Might it be a system incompatibility or something?
