Dead Rising is a very unique series.
The gist of it is that there is a time limit, and zombies are in the way. A lot of Zombies. Kill they ass with whatever you can find. Plants, Sledgehammers with Fire Axes attached to them, baseball bats, dildos, traffic cones, Fire Axes with Sledgehammers attached to them, Giant Dice, and more.
One of the interesting things about it is that at any point you can restart the story with all your character upgrades, which is great, because it's very easy to cock up and have it be unwinnable.
The first game has you play as "Frank West" a photojournalist who jumps in a mall and it's filled with zombies. Frank has to uncover what is going on, rescue survivors, (Who have AWFUL A.I., to the point where it's easier to rescue injured survivors because you can carry them.) and escape to the top of the mall before rescue arrives.
The second game has you play as Chuck Greene, who has a daughter named Katey, who requires Zombrex every 24 hours to prevent her turning into a Zombie. As before you have a time limit, but the map is bigger, The A.I. is infinitely better, and you can combine weapons to make items like say...A Fire Axe with a Sledgehammer attached to it. (It's really overpowered) Weapons now take damage, which actually is really fun, when the weapon is about to break and there are thousands of zombies between you and victory.

Without any doubt this is why I loved Dead Rising 2 so much more than the first. DR1's survivor intelligence was on par with that of a traffic cone (unless you give them a gun and tell them to stay put, as they have infinite ammo and near perfect aim). DR2 has a few issues with AI here and there, but at least I feel like I can leave a survivor alone for a few minutes without them running head on into a hoard of zombies without any means of personal defense.
Love the series, but I hate that Capcom is trying to pull a Street Fighter with it. The new version "Off the Record" is the same game only with Frank and a few small changes, but released as a full-priced retail game instead of simple DLC... not to mention the countless piles of useless "Pack" DLC for both versions.

Never played the 1st one, but I own the 2nd one. I liked it at first, but the more I played it the more I began to dislike it. So many things are bad opposed to good. At first glance you'd think "whoa you're in a huge mall full of zombies and you can use everything as a weapon, sounds awesome!" But you notice that it gets very old very fast. A lot of the weapons are practically the same weather you're swinging a bat, a hammer, an axe. Most of the weapons are just worthless like stuffed animals or helmets which cause like no damage to zombies. There's only 1 type of main enemy which is a regular old zombie. There's occasional boss fights that consist of just average normal humans gone crazy, that are really hard and frustrating to win. So, throughout the whole game you're only going to run into zombies. No special baddies like L4D2 or Dead Island has, just non stop regular zombies. And, the whole game has a time limit which is very frustrating have to rush from one area to the next without having any leisure time. Even when you enter the main missions, your time doesn't restart or stop or anything. You still have to finish it within the time limit or you fail. All in all I just think it could have been much better. That's my 2 cents.

@Resin: Well that is not particularly true. When the Military tries to come in and solve the problem, they actually make it worse, creating these even stronger zombies; that even run a ton faster.
But I feel that the first Deadrising was better. Do not care what anyone says, it feels like that one was a lot more playable. May have had a smaller area, but hey, pretty damn fun =D Also you didn't need to keep a little girl alive through the whole damn thing... Although I did like getting the achievements more on DR2 for some reason haha. And the secret weapon was pretty cool =D Also along with that, combining weapons was awesome. But it just didn't really have that same... Deadrising feel to it, you know? Dunno, but I am off to play Deadrising when I get home!
