I tried this a while ago, but the series got way more popular here in the past year or so, so the time's right for another attempt!

Anyway, I love this series. Right now, I'm replaying the ps2 ones since I discovered my computer can do ps2 emulation well enough. Playing Nocturne right now, which may be my favourite JRPG of all time, despite (or perhaps because of) the insane difficulty. What do you guys think about the series? Favourite game? Favourite sub-series? What alignment do you guys go for (for the record, I nearly always go neutral, but occasionally chaos)?
I've played Strange Journey as neutral through Carina before going Law and generally find it easier to negotiate with demons this way. It also helps that a lot of Law-aligned demons have healing spells without inheritance or sources, even though I've had better damage with all neutral co-op strike. I don't plan on going Chaos since people tell me it has the easiest boss.

Right now I'm still in the middle of Eridanus @ level 40 since I've mostly been only playing during lunch break at work. My party also sucks majorly because a lot of my current demons aren't compatible for fusing. I want to save my 78000+ macca and rarer expendables so I've been trying to negotiate more instead of resummoning.

I'd say Strange Journey is my favorite so far in spite of not being much of an RPG person nowadays. It's my first real experience with dungeon crawlers altogether. The music quality is amazing for DS and I absolutely love the miniboss theme and Eridanus's theme.

One thing irks me about the plot,
regarding how Arthur seems to pull working solutions out of nowhere for things nobody is even certain of - ESPECIALLY with cleansing the minds of soldiers possessed by Asura in Delphinus... as far as I've been told, Arthur's seemingly deus ex machina solutions are never explained in the story. One would think he's being tinkered with by a demon/angel in the Schwarzwelt for the good of humanity. I'd suspect Mastema but, who knows.
But disregarding that, the writing is really good.

The only other two SMT games I have are Devil Survivor Overclocked and Devil Survivor 2. DSO is what got me into SMT because I love strategy games to death, but I ultimately became curious about the actual RPGs in the series from there. I've been too into Strange Journey to play DS2 much yet or complete DSO, but from what I've played of DS2, I'm liking it even more than DSO in just about every way except for the lack of Magnetite and the higher cost of demons on auctions. Magnetite was so useful in customizing your demons. =(

I have a killer strength/agility build with the Mow Down attack, Ares Aid, Retaliate, and Drain Hit passive abilities, and Hustle for auto on DSO and I was working on it for my main in DS2... it's amazing to just one-shot a whole team in one attack and then practically be guaranteed an Extra Turn if someone survives, all the while being self-sustaining. =D

I usually forget about a game within days of starting it but I've been persistent with the SMT series. I'm actually interested in completing the demon compendium and getting all the endings. I do plan to pick up the Playstation 2 SMT games later this year as well. This alone makes Persona 3 worth getting, and everything Mue told me about Nocturne makes me want to play it.
As I type I'm currently playing Persona3 Portable, I already beat the FES game and I'm playing it to see what's different when playing as the female protagonist. Pretty neat stuff. I might take a break soon and start playing Persona 4, This would be my 3rd run through that game. I think it might be my favorite smt game. After that I might get on Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine, the MMO. I'll most likely sit around in Shinjuku Babel and play Devil Survivor 2 while glancing at the shout chat looking for a run I can join. (I'm 3% away from reaching level 86 and being able to fuse Nyarlatothep!) I'll probably do this until 5 or 6 AM in the morning and then fall asleep. I'll wake up and then continue the cycle.

TLDR: I've lost control of my life thanks to SMT

Maybe the best song in the game, Strange Journey has excellent music and is VERY atmospheric.

Also, Moh Shuvuu, Alice, and Hua Po are my favorite demons hands down bar none your opinion sux ect.

Nocturne is my least favorite SMT, It's still good though alot of people really love it I think it's great too but dang it really just feels different to me.

Yeah, I understand that. For one, it is quite possibly the hardest game in the series, and that is saying something. Also, it's got a different alignment system from the rest of the series, and the story is more inferred than told to you for the most part. It's got a lot less of the cyberpunk elements than the rest of the main series games too. It's a really love-it-or-hate-it game. My dream SMT game would have a story like the first two SMT games or the DDS games, a battle system like Nocturne's, and the fusion system from Strange Journey. I don't really care if the dungeons are first or third-person.

I like Persona 3 and 4 a lot, but the story isn't as good as in Persona 2 (both of them) IMO. They do a great job with the characters but the plot could use more depth.

Edit: This does a great job of summing up Nocturne's dungeon design.

This series has became my favorite video game series of all time. I've given so much praise about it in other threads, but I'm going to do it again.

I feel that this it's the perfect video game series. Its fusion of religion, mythology, sci-fi, and fantasy is something that appeals to me deeply. It also has very excellent music that's unmatched by any other game series I have played
except Etrian Odyssey
.

My first main game was Strange Journey, and it just pulled me in. The moment I started the game, I didn't know what to expect. It started out as some mission to some gaping hole that appeared over Antarctica, but then it was about demons attacking, ancient gods angry that humanity turned their backs on them, angels waging war against the demons, and you and your crew stuck in the middle of all it. I'd have to say it's my favorite game out of the entire series.

I also love how, for the most part, the battle systems in each game encourages you to use strategy by giving you bonuses if do things like exploit an enemy's weaknesses or get a critical hit, and penalizes you for having your weaknesses exploited or getting hit by a critical hit, and how buffing spells are pretty much an absolute necessity if you want to win.

As far as favorite demons go, I'd have to say my top five favorites are Hathor, Titania, Moh Shuvuu, Amaterasu and Metatron.

Hack you wii amos
My first SMT game was Persona 4 and it is still the only one in the series I have played. This took me one hell of a long time to complete. The final completion time for me was over 83 hours. Getting to those final 2 dungeons was a bitch because if you made a wrong choice then you get the bad ending.

Also, this was the last PS2 game I bought and it was a bargain at just £9.99! :D

I partially played the Persona and Devil Survivor games. What other Shin Megami Tensei games should I invest in?

I recommend you finish those before trying out another SMT. If you ask me, I think Devil Survivor and Persona3 are great starting points for people who want to get into the series. From there on out I'd suggest you go to like Nocturne or Strange Journey when you're ready for something a little more extreme.
If not, then there's always Devil Survivor 2 and Persona 4 to move on to.
The best starting point depend on what sort of games you are into. If you want a dungeon crawler with very deep gameplay, go for Strange Journey or Nocturne. If you want a traditional rpg with strong plot and characters, go for Digital Devil Saga or Persona 2: Innocent Sin (Eternal Punishment is a sequel). If you want an interesting blend of dungeon crawler and school sim with some good characters, go for Persona 3 or 4. And if you like SRPGs, go for Devil Survivor. None of the other ones are great starting points IMO, at least none of the ones that are available in English.
