I know how to save custom, but how do I save the original sprite map16 data?
I changed some tilemaps and now some graphics in Lunar Magic are invisible (but look fine in-game)
so obviously it's hard to place sprites if they are invisible to me

Ah, there's no way to save the sprite Map16 IIRC. To edit the sprite tilemaps, just hex editing.

yes i changed the sprite tilemap via hex editing and they look fine ingame.

but because I edited the graphic file the graphics in Lunar Magic are messed up i.e. invisible.
Press Ctrl-F9 in the Map16 editor. Ctrl-Shift-F9 is for the custom sprite Map16 data, but without the Shift key, it saves the normal sprite Map16 data.
