I'm honestly surprised nobody has made a thread for this yet.

I'm sure you've heard about The Hunger Games at some point, especially considering the movie just came out. If you have no idea what it's about, I'll let Wikipedia sum it up for you:

Every year, each District must hold a raffle (known as the "reaping") to choose one boy and one girl (ranging from age 12–18) to participate in the Hunger Games, a competition in which each of the twenty-four contestants (known as the "tributes") fight to the death in a televised arena until only one is left alive.

So yeah. Discuss whatever you like, be it the book, the recently released movie, the sequels, etc.

Being a hardcore fan (meaning I've read all the books and saw the movie on opening day), I've got to say, this is probably the best thing to come into my life. I finished the whole trilogy in like 2 weeks, and I only started reading it because my Language Arts teacher requires that we read a book every day and I had nothing to read, so I picked it off the shelf. After I finished Mockingjay, all I could say was "wow". I realized just how thought out it was. The first book feels like it had Catching Fire and Mockingjay in mind while it was being written. The world created by Suzanne Collins feels like it's full of symbolism and meaning. I for one could see something like this actually happening in the distant future.

The movie was not a disappointment, by the way. If you've read the book(s) and want to see how the movie turned out, you won't be disappointed. It's faithful to the book and isn't a cheap cash-in. I enjoyed every second of it, and I guarantee you will, too.
My dad brought them up to the family a while ago. I've never read any of them, though, and I have no intention of doing so. Dystopian novels like that are something I usually only read when I'm forced to for a class.
I do not understand why this is so popular. I haven't read any of the books, seen the movie, nor have I even heard of it a week ago, so I don't know if it's good or bad. The popularity just... surprises me, is all.

TBH, this is the first time i've ever heard or read about The Hunger Games.

I might read the books whenever i have a chance, though.
I went to the dentist today, and the assistant guy mentioned it to me for some idle conversation. He seemed surprised I hadn't heard of it.

I did see this thread earlier but didn't really read it, and it didn't come to mind at the time.

So I guess it's the new breakout book series?
Read the books, thought they were pretty good but not the greatest thing I'd ever read, and the premise is suspiciously similar to Battle Royale (this is what they call the hunger games in France). Beyond the premise, they are totally different, yes, but it is still pretty suspicious. And personally I prefer Battle Royale. Despite that, I'm probably going to see the movie sometime, should be decent as long as they didn't tone things down too much or put too much emphasis on the generic love triangle romance shit.
I know of this series because my 14 year old sister reads the books. I haven't read the books or seen the movie, but from what I've heard, it's just a socially acceptable version of twilight.
Err, absolutely nothing I've heard about it is remotely like Twilight. Elaborate?
Obviously it's not about vampires and crap, but it's the same mindless teenage girl's wetdream that puts me off of twilight so much. On the surface it's got a story about the downfall of mankind into a world where the oppressive ruling class causes the lower class to kill for their amusement, but, at least from what I've heard, almost all of the story revolves around the main character (Who's name is "catness" or something?) being involved in a love triangle. Sure the high school is training to kill other children, and the problems they face are actual problems, but it's not really the setting that matters in this case. Mind you, I haven't heard about it from that many people, but that seems to be the gist of it that I get from fans.

Or maybe I just have an automatic repugnance for things popular. I like to think that isn't the case, but I know it's something fairly prevalent.
Hrm, that doesn't strike me as inherently bad. Romance being a center stage element can make for a pretty good story, though I haven't seen many that do it well. Twilight's bad because it glorifies creepy and abusive behavior. That's not inherent to romance stories, and not even to "teenage girl wetdream" ones. It'd be like claiming gratuitous, consequence free violence and power fantasy is inherent to teenage boy's media. You see a lot of it, but it's far from everything, and like everything under the sun, it's still possible to do right.

Hell you could argue Stephanie Meyer did it "right" since she sold a ton of books and got rich. Her books are wish fulfillment incarnate, I guess, but hey.

Well... not quite. There is sort of a love triangle going on, but it's certainly not the main part of the story. The influence it has on the plot gets heavier in the second and third books, but even then, it's not the main story. In the first book, however Katniss is only "in love" with fellow tribute Peeta because it will get her sponsors and things which can send her food and supplies during the games. Peeta really has feelings for Katniss, but it's all played out for the cameras during the games. The other guy is Katniss' long time friend Gale, but if you watch the movie, he really only matters in the beginning. In the book she talks about him quite a bit, and once again, the influence he has increases in the sequels.

tl;dr There's romance, but it doesn't become important (or real) until the sequels.
Having seen both the Hunger Games movie and the Battle Royale movie, I've determined that I like Battle Royale a lot better, although both are decent. Battle Royale has better action and much more tension, not only do they show some of the gore but also there's one really important difference: the kids have all known each other for years. Hunger Games is still decent, but the books are substantially better than the movie.

And Hunger Games is much less gender-dependent than Twilight. Guys can still enjoy it. There is some romance but it isn't too important for the most part. The social/political commentary is pretty shallow, but the books are a pretty enjoyable read. More like the new Harry Potter than the new Twilight (except nowhere near as popular).
I saw the movie last weekend and I really thought it was excellent and well thought out. Dystopia themed stories such as the well famed 1984, Animal Farm and now The Hunger Games are all quite interesting. Just hope that this remains entirely fiction
