I am new to SMW hacking. I have got a few n00by questions.

1. What is layer 1, layer 2 and layer 3? I saw a few generators such as layer 2 smash but I dont know what they do.

2. How can I rip backgrounds and objects from other games?

3. How do I enable the 'no yoshi intro' for a level?

4. Why do custom sprites show a red cross in Lunar Magic, but when I play the sprites show properly? Is it possible to make the sprites show properly in Lunar Magic?

5. Are there any good tutorials on how to make patches? I can code custom blocks easily but I do not know to make xkas patches.

Thank you. :)
1. They are, well, different layers of objects; each layer can move independent from the others, but objects on one layer are fixed in relation to each other. Layer 1 is the main foreground layer, layer 2 is used either as background or for moving parts of the foreground (like the yellow ground in Donut Plains 2 or the giant smashing spikes in some of the castles), and layer 3 is used for the status bar as well as for simple backgrounds when layer 2 is already used as foreground.

2. You'll find quite a few tutorials for ripping graphics here.

3. By using one of the Castle, Ghost House or Rope tilesets (purple poison mushroom button, top dropdown box) and making sure that the "Disable No-Yoshi Intro" checkbox (fish button) isn't checked.

4. Because Lunar Magic doesn't know what the custom sprites are supposed to look like. This tutorial explains how to make them show up correctly.

5. Indeed there are.
