First up, I'd like to thank this great site and its userbase. It offers me a really fun hobby that really brings me back to old times. People around here are really friendly, helping me by answering my silly questions and offering me a password recovery almost every time I decide to delete browser memory Thanks a lot!
But onwards to the reason for this post:
Announcing "Super Mario Legacy"
I've started creating this hack approximately nine months ago (but I started hacking much longer ago). I have very limited time, though, so the amount of content is spare. Nevertheless, I hope you like what I have to show.

(Click on an image to enlarge it.)
Gameplay
I'm aiming for classic Mario gameplay. Excessive ASM gimmicks will be absent. Almost all levels will feature regular platforming. Levels tend to be longer than the average SMW level; therefor, multiple midway points will be present.
The game will feature 120 exits over 75 levels, spread over 9 game worlds. Worlds will feature one or two themes, and are between 6 and 10 levels long. Saving is allowed after each level. Secret exits are found using (an adjusted version of) Iceguy's Red Coin Counter.
Custom sprites, blocks, and the likes, will all be implemented where I see fit. However, they should fit in with the general Mario feeling I'm trying to preserve.
Progress
Currently, I have about 45/77 levels done. The overworld is completely done. For now, I'm also done with writing the ASM code I wanted.
About "updates" and the likes
I'm not someone who posts updates every day. I will instead post one big batch of updates once every while.
Also, no incomplete demo's containing X worlds will be released.
Responses
If you have feedback, questions, suggestions, please do write it here, or write me a PM, or write me an e-mail (see profile). I appreciate every bit of feedback and will answer everything I receive.

I normally don't post here, but I'll say this.
Your overworld is fucking fantastic. I'd love to see the finished hack!

Thanks for the kind replies! I honestly can't answer the question of when the hack will be completed, as I have limited time to work on the project. To give any indication, I do aim to complete the hack this year.

This hack looks amazing so far. The OWs look fantastic and far more colorful than most. The levels also look very well-designed and give a very classic Mario feel.
The idea of using custom material while maintaining a Mario feel is something I strive for myself when doing a chocolate hack.
Overall, this project reminds me a lot of my own Super Mario Bros. 5 Reborn. Its story, like that of this project, wasn't any deeper than what you'd see in an official Mario platformer, but didn't involve saving the princess. I also tried to keep the Mario feel of that hack intact despite the amount of custom material I inserted.

Really loving the whole visual side of this hack. The palettes and level design look great, not to mention the well made overworlds! Nice work! Looking forward to seeing more progress of this!

Nice hack,Ragey!!
Some questions about your hack:
1)Your hack have Koopalings and Bowser?
2)You'll use HDMA in your hack?
3)What worlds had your hack?Explain your attributes!!

That's a pretty nice hack. I like the overworld and the SMB3ish feel on it.

I've not yet considered what bosses I'll be using. The things I can do with ASM is limited, though. Its too soon to tell for now, but I can disclose that I probably won't use the regular SMW bosses, though.
I currently have no plans of using HDMA for the hack. All backgrounds have gradients in their image.
While I have all the worlds planned out, I'm not revealing all of them just yet ;-) However, it will be similar to what you'd expect from a regular Mario game (grass world, sky world, lava world, etc.).

Thanks. It's good to know people like the levels as well. Until now, I've been hearing almost exclusively about how people like the overworld maps ;-P

Super Mario 3 is my favorite game. I'm not really going for a SMB3 feel or anything, but I guess my preference sneaks its way into my hack anyway ;-P

Thanks again everyone for the kind feedback. I've been busy on ASM for the past few days. Things haven't been going very smooth, but the systems I intended to make are slowly falling into their place. Once the basic systems are done, I can start building levels again and pick up the pace, hopefully.

Hello,

(Click on an image to enlarge it.)
Just a little heads up that I'm still working on this ;-)
I've made a lot of progress regarding ASM code and level design. About 25/77 of the levels are now complete, meaning the hack is roughly 30% complete!

Hello. Can you please stop being so amazing? Thank you.
Wow, great stuff here! Loving the hack's style, it seems really Mario-ish and very fun to play too!
Especially liking that forest level.
Great job!

My, these screenshots really caught my attention. The choice of graphics is pretty good and from what I can see so far, the level design looks decent. The Bowser submap is looking pretty sweet.
Looking forward to seeing more.

Hello,
Still working on this. I uploaded a few pictures of world 3-1 and world 8-3. I've actually made a lot more progress/levels, but as usual I tend to keep that all a secret ;)
1 2 3 4 5
I linked them because they're quite big, and I didn't have the time to make thumbnails.
So yeah, this hack still is up and running. About 45/77 levels are now done, and with all the ASM enhancements already in place, the finish line is in sight. Though I must say that I won't be able to release the hack in Januari. I'm not sure when it will be released, but it will probably be way before summer.
I've received some messages here and there inquiring about the hack, which was really nice. Thanks for that ;)
I hope to soon be able to tell when I'll release this. It probably won't be long until I can reveal a final release date.

I know what it's like to make a hack with not much time on one's hands from personal experience, but I'm going to say that everything you've posted in this thread is great. This includes, of course, the level and overworld designs. I'm surprised I only now found out about this hack, given how good this looks.
