Tip: When you're about to release your hack, make a patch first, patch it to a clean ROM, and then test that. This way, you are testing both the hack AND the patch.

After making a level for SMWCP2, I have learned tons of things. With this, I am confident in making ny own hack that wouldn't be a failure like the one I tried doing.

But anywho, I am making a hack that make people think they are playing an actual Mario game - not just another hack slapped on with these other stuff.

For now, I am calling it "A Super Mario Project", as a beta name that all games start out with.

I have only done the first level, and is trying to find someone to play test it and leave feedback. I am going on a level by level pace, and will try to have one level done, get some to test and, then move on to the next.

For now, I present you a video of the first level:

1-1 Unnamed Level

I tried fitting a lot of the basic things in hack here - presenting them using game-play not a message box or something (which, by the by, I plan not to make an appearance in this game). I don't point it out throughout the video, but if you pay attention to every new block, enemy, item, etc introduced, I try to to show the player how they/it works.

Also, I am going to replace all graphics and music to be consistent, someway or another. I've found tons of sprite sheets and GFX files in the Graphics section and C3, I just need to find more and compile graphics that work.

So yeah...no plot, no OW, no bosses, no World themes - this hack is currently barren of any planning. These will come to me later on.

The Yoshi coins are just placeholders now - I want incorporate a "Star Coin System" some way or another.

I'll be using custom music, to give off that this is like an Official Mario game, a remix of the staple Star Music, and the obligatory SMB main theme remix.

~

If you wanna help me out, shoot me a PM or post it here or something - I'll especially need help on ASM stuff D:

Not really an update, but I got a friend to play through the first level and he gave me a thumbs up.

I started the second level already, which would introduce more basic things.

I don't have any screen shots other than this, which is a video I took to show off an annoying glitch, but it will do for now.

I will change the music and add some other stuff - the level's just two screens in.
So far the only problem at all that I can find is the shading in the gfx, its pilowshading, wich sucks and makes things look flat and textureless.
Other than that, the palettes and level design look good
I only really noticed the pillow shading on the Cement Blocks. You should give them a more rocky texture or style them after their counterparts in earlier Mario games. The custom music I heard sounded a bit bland and not very Mario-like.

Here are some music suggestions
Grassland Song by Mariomaniac444 This one is a very Mario-like custom composition.

Rock the Piano by ThinkOneMoreTime This is another good song for grassland levels.

Sunny Fields by Gpetry If you've ever played SMW2+3, this tune might be familiar.

New Super Mario Bros. - Main Theme by Jimmy52905 Yeah, overused music is overused, but if you're going for a classic Mario feel, this is a good choice.

For the underground section, I'd use Earthy Caverns from Imamelia's 2009 Chocolate Level Design Contest soundtrack.
Well, GSG. After watching the preview video of the first level, it was like SMB2 and SMB3.

SMB2 because of the POW block. When it lands hard into the ground, the enemies on the screen die and turn into coins.
SMB3 because of the P-Switch turning breakable bricks into coins. I should probably suggest you to change the P-Switch theme though. I also found out that there is a finish point similar to SMWCP2.

So, great ASM inserted to the level. I liked the level overall, and a nice start to your hack in progress.
@xlk: Thank you introducing to the world of pillow-shading! I will now keep this in mind forever as I progress through this hack =D

Yeah...I have a real problem with creating cement blocks. That graphic is probably one of the most subject to change, since I myself find it unpleasing to the eyes.

And...OH MY GOD THOSE (first two) SONGS ARE PERFECT! Especially that Grassland Song! Not only that, but they're practically obscured in hacks! The main reason why I picked the music I used in my level (By the name Azieth) is because it's not that popular, which I am trying achieve as much I could. I know I could just request stuff, but who'll help with that?

But anywho, I love it. Thank you. I'll use "Rock the Piano" as my bonus theme. I'm not bother to download and here the Essence one, and the NSMB one, since they're very known and the NSMB theme is, well, NSMB's theme, and I'm looking for custom music that can be passed off as Mario.

Is cave music alright? it doesn't really show in the video though...I find it quite perfect and epic, but nontheless, here's Exodus, the cave music. If anyone doesn't find it quite right, can you suggest something that fits my "guidelines"

@DLD..Detroit, yeah, I'll stick with that: Thanks! I will change all the music here (I'll try if I can change the sound effects, which is in my "Hope I can achieve it" list). Also, that finish point, or the "Goal Roulette" was made to be like the one in SMWCP2. It's pretty nifty and currently underused, fortunately.

~

I don't really have any huge progress, but here's a little skeleton of on the first few screens of level 2:

Link

You might ask:
- What's with the vine connected to the mushroom? Well, that's ledge vine - the graphics aren't just made yet since I still need to find or make a good vine replacement.
- What with those weird vines hanging in midair? They be horizontal vines (just tile 6 made horizontal), they also don't have proper graphics yet.
What's with that muncher pit? Aha. Well, I "fixed" the munchers to be spin-jumpable (although I still need to do some bug-fixing on the block...) - when the player breaks the turn blocks (I will provide a mushroom), he'll fall down spin-jumping on the munchers, teaching him that munchers are spin-jumpable here.

This will be an athletic level, so I'll have to fish through the music section for a good music replacement.
I think you done a good job in authenticating classic Mario gameplay feel. Keep up the awesome work, I wouldn't mind playing this.
I like the good SMB3 theme to it. It also has some SMW mixed in, which makes it good and unique.
If you need any help in gfx making, I can help and, If you whant, make FG gfx.
@Riot: Thanks! I was hoping for that!
@SuperWeirdo: Thanks!
@xlk: Oh wow! Thanks for the offer! I'll see if I'll need something - this hack is going on a "when I get there" pace. So if I need anything, I'll see about it. Thanks for offer again! You don't know how much help that would provido =D

Anywho, no level updates to show, bit I do have something:

World themes:
W1 Grasslands and Hills
W2 Mountains and Cliffs
W3 Micro and Macro
W4 Forest, Rivers, and Waterfalls
W5 Underwater
W6 Cloud and Ice
W7 Lava and Caves
W8 Technological and Haunted
Special World ???

I will be doing the whole NSMB world progression: W1 > W2 > W3 or W4 > W5 > W6 or W7 > W8 > Special World

You might be thinking, what's with these "abnormal" themes? Well, all off these themes are mixtures of past Super Mario themes (and Yoshi's Island and Mario Land and Mario $ Luigi)

W1: Every Mario game should start off in Grasslands.
W2: I wanted something different from Deserts, so I thought about it an though about M&L: Superstar Saga - it's second "world" theme is Mountains and Cliffs, so I went with that.
W3: A mixture of SMB3's Big Land and Super Mario Land 2's Macro Zone, and it's opposites of a Small Land and Micro Zone
W4: I am a real sucker for waterfalls. I just had to get a world dedicated to it
W5: Inspired by the Turtle Zone of SML2. Will feature a sunken ship and submarine.
W6: What do you get when you mix to off the most annoying world themes ever? An even more annoying one! Yay!
W7: Mixture of Vanilla Dome and Valley of Bowser - lava needs to be incorporated at the end - always
W8: Now these are my too most favorite world themes used in any Mario titles - Techno and Haunted, inspired from SML2's Mario and Pumpkin Zones respectively, also by the courses of Super Mario Kart. Definitely look forward to something interesting here...
SW: Nope - I will not admit it.

Anywho, I already have at least one level in mind for all of these worlds, but still not sure how many I'll make. I'll see about making at least eight levels per world.
Not much to show
Looks pretty well designed. The BG seems a tad bland with just the clouds, maybe make some clouds like the original SMW had and keep the clouds you have now at the top of the screen.

That actually sounds like a good idea!

Anywho, no progress, but I am going to show something that spoils the levels in world 1, but I'll only do it for this world since it is just world 1:

w-1: Grasslands and Hills
1-1: Grassland
1-2: Mushroom
1-3: Underground - Sewer
1-4: Grassland
1-5: Hills
1-6: Auto-Scroll
1-A: Water
1-B: Pipes, Hills
1-Tower: Tower
1-Castle: Castle, boss undediced
1-Switch Palce: Yellow Switch Palace

These are in no particular order, and is not final.

EDIT:

Also, during school the morning, I decided to at least incorporate a desert in World 2 (I have tons of Desert ideas, but my whole "do something different for once" stopped me, but I said what the heck - a desert is perfect world here!).

Updated 1-1

The graphics are not final - ignore the horrible pipe corners and the out of place cement block.

Also:

1-2 in action

Horrible playing, horrible sprite placement (the sprite placements are very tentative) and horribly buggy YI Goomba.

Yeah, this level needs a lot of work from me, but this is how the level is laid out.

Anywho, I probably won't post videos of anything more than the first three levels, since I don't want to spoil a lot.
Did you tweak Earthy Caverns? The drums sound louder than they should, and the whole thing sounds a bit de-synced. I also think you should use some other music on the OW. I'd go for something shorter and more Mario-like.

M.C. Kids - Intro Cutscene This might be more fitting, but I'd recommend tweaking it a bit. Try changing all @9s to @13 and raising their octaves, changing all @29s to @10, and removing the last two channels since they clash with everything else.

For 1-2, I'd use my port of Mexico Zone from Speedy Gonzales GB.

Music choices aside, this hack looks very nice so far. Yeah, I may come off as a bit harsh about custom music, but it's something I'm very picky about.

I turned it up a bit. I'll lower it down then. Also, that OW is temporary.

I'll take a look at this in a bit.

Oh. I'm only using custom ones, to create that "oh I never heard things (version of) this song before! It's an original from this game!" Essentially, I'm going the SMWCP2 route and have everything custom (except the sound effects...)

Thanks! I don't find you harsh with the music at all! In all actuality, those suggestions you've made are very helpful!

I updated the graphics style of my hack and tweaked the first level

Isn't final though, and I still need someone to fulfill the fix request for the POW Block.

Edit
Video!

One question though: Are the enemies going to have their own custom graphics?

Yepp. I'm currently just collecting stuff that will fit - I'm going for a new Mario game feel, so why not have everything custom?

It will be awesome to replace sound effects, that's probably at the bottom of the "maybe" list.
WELCOME TO MY 2000TH POST!
I haven't posted in days, which is out of character of me, just to update this thread with something "big"

Well, at least to me.

Oh hey - 1-1 got a makeover again
- Anything that looks bad is not final. I will replace the Status Bar with a sprite one, and hopefully it would be the one from SMWCP2 once p4 makes it user-friendly. =D
- Blue coins are placeholders for what I hope to be star coins (and I'm pretty sure they're releasing the ones in SMWCP2). But, I can find something different in the worst case scenario.
- A little after the midpoint, there's a small pipe blocked off for Super Mario and only accessible by small Mario. It's a 16x16 pipe. I'm planning to have NSMB-esque bonus rooms accessible only be Small Mario. Though, currently I only have a pipe that's accessible from the above - no sideways or bottom. Help would be appreciated. =D
- I'm not satisfied with the background. I want to learn how to do those cool scrolling effects, and I'm thinking of using it here in the future.

If I could find better Koopa Troopa graphics, which includes all it's sub-species, I would gladly replace these. Currently, they're just edited redrawn Koopas, and they're a little small for my tastes.

Goal is definitely WIP. So is the midway.

Piranha Plant and SMW Goomba graphics. The ones the classic Goombas are using now are placeholder - I don't get how to remap the graphics in OAM or something in the disassembly.

But they're supposed to look like this:

And it seems like there isn't any classic Para-Goomba, nor a disassembly of the SMW one. :/
If anyone knows of one, could you please tell me so? =O

Edited UP and points graphics. And Spin Jump Cloud graphics also. As I've said, I want to replace every single graphic here with custom ones.

The bonus rooms I mentioned earlier will have background similar to this. I'm already done with the bonus room that's leads from 1-1, though I'm not going to show it. But I will show this background, which it uses. Don't mind the high-lighted tile.

~

Other Stuff:
- edited the blocks, so the Turn Blocks and other stuff look better now.
- I'm unsure of using POW blocks in this hack anymore. They're really buggy, and no one seems to want to fix them up (see my siggy) - I would love to, but I have very little asm knowledge :C
- After much pondering...Yoshi will not see the light of day in this hack
- FG and BG for grassland is by MetalJo, though I edited them a bit and added a few tiles (a steady slope) to meet my needs.
- Cave FG, yes, is the one in SMWCP2. Turns out it's free for use. Pretty unused too!
- still have no fitting cave background :C
- Cave song is Superslide and Bonus is a faster version of Rock the Piano
- Piranha Plant, SMW Goomba, and Goomba graphics are heavily based on sprite sheets I've found. Though I really needed to edit them to fit some circumstances. Most block graphics are based on DeeY's tilesets.

That's all I have for now. I was going to wait to at least get some things done for level 2, and draw some more graphics, but I'm satisfied with what I've accomplished. (Plus I can't take not posting here anymore!)

Yay for my GFX :D
Looks really cool, looking forward for this ^^

Have you disabled the status bar in the last screenie ?
