| Tip: Check for glitched graphics in all frames of an object or sprite (i.e., the ON/OFF block changing, etc...). |

Could someone get me started on editing Mario's graphics? I have my own character in mind.
I have YYCHR and I've extracted the graphics from SMW GFX22 seems to have some mario in it, but the palette is all nasty, how can I change it to the correct palette?
Also, when editing these graphics, does everything need to be in the same position as the original for it to work?

I believe its in GFX32.
And for the pallete, make a save state of your ROM and load that state in YY-CHr.

Mario uses palette 8, btw.
Everything pretty much needs to be in the same position as the original graphics, unless you remap it using the Player Tilemap Editor or some other way.

I see, alright, I'll have a go then.
Also, is it possible to have multiple mario replacements, so I could have a slightly edited graphic with a snorkel for underwater levels for example?
How do you go about doing this with normal enemies or blocks? Lots of hacks I've played have had multiple different looking thwomps for example, do you just edit the base enemy graphics in YY-CHR and put it in without replacing?

Try using the Mario ExGFX patch, aka the Mario + Animated Tile ExGFX v2.1 patch. I've never used it, though.
If you want different sprites/blocks in different levels, easy. Copy the file with the graphic you want to change into an ExGFX file and edit it. Then insert ExGFX and Super GFX Bypass the original file with the modded one.
If you want different blocks (and blocks only) in the same level, either find space you'll never use again in the life of your hack in the normal FG files and put in the graphics there. Better, use an ExGFX file and put the graphics there. Then bypass it as BG2/3. Use the map16 to make a new block tile with the graphics.
If you want different sprites in the same level, too bad. You'll need to put the edited graphics in empty spots, then request (or write) a custom sprite that uses those tiles. Don't ask me about that.

Sounds cool, thanks for the info. Once I have my graphic made, is there a seperate GFX file with what Mario looks like with a fire flower, I know in SMW it's just recolouring, so I wondered how you edit that aspect too.
I'd like it to be more than just a recolour for my guy.
