Procrastination - take 2

I tried making this thread before, but I misstated my point.

I'm a terrible procrastinator. I easily and willingly distract myself with TVTropes, the Internet, and numerous other things, and days and weeks pass in which I get little done.

It's not for lack of stuff I need to do; I have school, that platformer I'm helping to write, a couple Minecraft worlds to improve, vague ideas that come and go, and, most importantly, school.

I've been thinking about this for about a year, and I've made many plans and ideas to do instead of to stall, but they all eventually fail after a while when I realize that I don't really like them.

So, I'd like to know what you guys do to overcome procrastination.

The most I can do in this thread as of right now (because I, too, am looking for the same solution for procrastination from different reasons) is relate to you. I have piles of paperwork long overdue that need grading, hours of work to put in, RP's to complete, a game to concept and create, and just recently rooted into my head a bank account to make for my future thingy that I'm not going to share until it ACTUALLY happens!

Guess the one thing I can suggest, though, is take it one at a time. Pick out what tasks have the highest priority and knock them down with so much prejudice it hurts!

Other than that, I can't even bring myself to do THAT anymore.

I guess you just kind of have to experiment with different ideas that you believe may help you keep focused and see what works for you. Personally, I find listening to Podcasts keeps me focused on work, because the work mostly keeps me focused on it, so I end up enjoying both more as a result. Music doesn't work quite as well for me unless there's a specific piece I'm addicted to at the time.

Although personally, I have some workaholic tendencies as I feel guilty whenever I'm not working - even if I feel exhausted as a result of overworking. I suppose I just have trouble finding a balance between working too much and not enough, but I doubt I'd ever be happy with my workload either way.

Not blue.
I find my biggest problem is that since my girlfriend lives with me, a lot of my time subconsciously goes to her. Even with her telling me to concentrate on homework, she eventually expects me to get our posts done on our RP site among other things. We tried settling that problem, but it also doesn't help that we have to spend time in the same room, let alone the same house, whenever I have a window open for homework.

I find I work much better when I'm away from home now than when I am AT home. But with the hours work is giving me, I can't stay away from the house for very long without having to sigh under my breath and get ready for work. Also, my girlfriend gets panicky when I'm away for longer than a day; once she got angry with me because I worked extra hours at my job. So my boss and I gave her the store phone number. That is neither here nor there.

My concentration issue lies with her--I love her, but I need to tune her out for a while if I wanna finish-no, actually BEGIN-my overdue homework...

Lesson: Any outside influences, best friends or otherwise, must be tuned out, and if they don't wanna understand that, too effing bad. Do your werk!

My most fruitful efforts to avoid procrastinating is to get obsessed over whatever I want to work on. Then it will distract you from the distractions, so to speak.
Thank you for the tips, guys. I'll certainly keep them in mind

Also, rather than taking any assignment on at once (especially at the last minute) it helps to do it a bit at a time. You know how after a lot of required reading, you just start seeing words and aren't really following it anymore? That's usually a good time to stop and return a little later. You can also do this with papers - writing a paragraph or two each day ensures high quality and lets you gather your thoughts in between. Pacing yourself also makes "big" assignments much less menacing.

Everything here is very true. Even with "easy" assignments, it helps having the extra time to make sure everything needed is included without errors. It's easy to let dumb mistakes slip by when you're being overworked at the last minute trying to get everything finalised before the due time. It's even more frustrating if they're obvious mistakes that would've been avoided with some simple proofreading.

Starting assignments early and getting them done in small incremental bits works great. Leaves lots of time for breaks so there's plenty of time to balance screwing around with actual assignment work. I make time for discrations that I'd normally do when procrastinating since forcing myself to work on for long stretches of time assignments never works out well. Especially if it comes down to an allnighter.
