If you are wondering what happened with my old hack, I just started back up on it again.

The improved title screen with entirely custom BG...

...and the first level using the same BG just to show how it looks.
Now here are some screenshots from the 3rd world. (Palm Shores) I know some graphics are glitched, so don't remind me.

With a clever use of palettes, I've created a sort of "shadow" effect in the water.

The sparkling waters of Palm Shores are inviting but dangerous.

I take a shot at non-linear level designing.

Mario goes exploring the seaside forest.

Note: this level scrolls left instead of right to give some variaty.

Those spikes are pretty deadly! be careful not to get hit by them.

Last but not least, this stage is one of my favorites in enviremental design.

Hit invisible coin blocks below...

...to cross the chasm above.

Mind the sleeping fish! you won't want to wake those guys up.
Most graphics were drawn by me, and some imported from other games.

That small Mario pwns. I'm guessing you haven't made Super Mario yet? The water "shadow effect looks really good too!

The underwater cave tileset looks okay but you might want to fix the tiles above the hidden coin blocks. I like the Small Mario GFX.

Yes, I'm still wondering what I'm going to base it on.

The cement blocks were ripped from SMAS. I don't know where, though. I just found them on the savestate.

I might have missed it but are there only going to be 7 worlds? I love the graphics(much of it looks like some sort of a cookie concoction) and the fact that it is 7 sub-maps without one big OW. What does Lakito mean? Is that a variant on Lakitu?
I also love the brightness and the Kirby styled graphics. It is neat that most of the screenshots have water in them(including Orange Ocean water). What was the story-line again?

*Deep breath* Alright, here I go:
There are 8 worlds in all, I just didn't show the 8th submap or the secret one.
What's a cookie concoction? (Don't tell me if this is a stupid question)
There is a big OW, It's not done, though.
Lakito is a spelling error. (Do'h!)
The storyline is about a mystical rod that controls the climates of the world, when (Insert Villian here) steals the rod, he decides to unleash chaos with it until the people promote him to supreme leader. Each World has a gimmick, for instance, Lakitu Peak is constantly being melted away, and Palm Shore's tides are uncontrollable.
And the thing about the title of the hack, I'm pretty sure the villian will be called Midnight.

(anything in quotes is what you are saying AS)
"*Deep breath* Alright, here I go:

OK, sounds like a surprise.
"What's a cookie concoction? (Don't tell me if this is a stupid question)"
Let me just tell you that I have told many stupid questions before, and I can be very weird when I use literary devices. For some reason your worlds look light and floury, like a cookie. I am trying the best way to explain how I like the interesting new graphics. It is like there is a sheen of flashiness that makes the levels look low-tech like an older cartoon but high-tech like a sunny Disney video.
"There is a big OW, It's not done, though."
I would expect so. It would be different to just have sub-maps as it could be compatible. Would I argue that it is the best sub-map selection? No, but I am curious about Rattlethorns. Is that just a fancy name to illustrate the darkness and danger of the woods or are there real representations in that world(possibly snakes or cobrats from SMBII)?
"Lakito is a spelling error. (Do'h!)"
Heh, it sounds Japanese like an obscure foreign term or a name. I would suggest to find a way to be more creative. It is very good that a stage set up high in the clouds would be named after them. It would also be nice to do a SMBIII and actually have a whole stage devoted to either a Lakitu chasing after Mario or many Lakitus, and different kinds, in one stage.
"The storyline is about a mystical rod that controls the climates of the world, when (Insert Villian here) steals the rod, he decides to unleash chaos with it until the people promote him to supreme leader."
I hate to be a bother(as I feel like I am on everything I post) but there are possibly 4 hacks with rods that are center-pieces. Yes, Boingboing is doing a hack on a staff but that is like calling an apple, a pear, it is basically wrapping up a bunch of plastic plates and calling it tinfoil.
IOW if there is a wrap to Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons I would like to hear it. Somehow, and I am probably the first one who whines about originality, it would be a nice hack if the villain wasn't so stereotypical. Maybe the villain holds a grudge against Mario? Maybe the villain doesn't want to be supreme leader but he accidentally activates a rod with his feet so Mario have to go after him?
Each World has a gimmick, for instance, Lakitu Peak is constantly being melted away, and Palm Shore's tides are uncontrollable."
Sounds like FF1. I actually really like the premise, and you could probably make the tides react a lot differently than the original game. I can't wait for Palm Shores though, I love those kinds of levels. So what are the gimmicks with the other worlds, is Magmarock going to freeze? it would also be good to incorporate a system that makes every level change(like the weather system in Mario Adventure) so that when you get there the level randomly changes to become more unstable.
Will Midnight be a custom boss? Possibly. Are the Koopas going to return? Will Bowser aid Mario, like in SMRPG, instead of trying to destroy him? If Midnight is a custom boss it would actually be good if he can throw ice cubes, fire balls and other elemental objects at Mario. The stage could also act like a Reznor stage as the rod is self-destructing Midnight Castle.
"And the thing about the title of the hack, I'm pretty sure the villian will be called Midnight."
Well, so Midnight it is! I do find it interesting what a name focusing on time would have to do with climate control. Perhaps if Mario isn't at him by midnight, horrible things will happen.

The Critic.

I'm not the greatest when it comes to a creative story, maybe you could help.
An idea just sparked in my mind! Maybe I could use Midnight in a sequel that focuses on time other than Climate. I got a few ideas for the current villian right here:
*Thunder
*Storm
*The Weatherman (Lol)
(You can build off of these if you want, I personally like Storm)
The name? How about: "Perfect Storm" or "Climate Control".
In Magmarock Cavern, the tempurature can be changed by entering a pipe. For instance, an unpassable lavafall can be easily avoided by freezing the cave. It's an idea I've had ever since I started hacking.
Custom sprites? (Shiver) I might need some help, because the very thought runs shivers down my spine.
Thanks for the suggestions.
