An idea just sparked in my mind! Maybe I could use Midnight in a sequel that focuses on time other than Climate. I got a few ideas for the current villian right here:
*Thunder
*Storm
*The Weatherman (Lol)
(You can build off of these if you want, I personally like Storm)
The name? How about: "Perfect Storm" or "Climate Control".
In Magmarock Cavern, the tempurature can be changed by entering a pipe. For instance, an unpassable lavafall can be easily avoided by freezing the cave. It's an idea I've had ever since I started hacking.
Custom sprites? (Shiver) I might need some help, because the very thought runs shivers down my spine.
Thanks for the suggestions.
Augh! Me and my big mouth. I actually liked the climate stick and how it changes the atmosphere. Any story that revolves around the four elements is a strike for me, just like any story that has bosses.
Oh geeze, custom sprite ideas? Did I do thaaaat? I am just an idea consultant, rambling on useless tracts. Maybe there is some help in the Lounge of Professionals(tm).
I appreciate the "thank you", I don't hear it often enough. However every other time I did deserve the cream pies. At least if Mario Speedrunner and this hack come out, I can get a dedication including a coupon to Toys R Us for free copies of NSMB. I would probably never play them, owning a DS.
I am only talking about it now, because of the big picture at the beginning of this post. It will take a true artist to come up with a few short paragraphs going over these new ideas. I will try:
First of all: I am guessing that this game may be renamed to the current villain. Perhaps you could come up with a catchy title, like Thunder's Blunders or Stormy Weather. Maybe even name it Venom Rain.
The Weatherman makes me think of the 70s Terrorist group who sort of caused "climate control" to physical objects by bombing and desecrating them. Thunder is OK, and Storm. It seems like you want short, catchy names that allude to the character's no.1 negative trait.
Why not name the villain Storm then? Use the title Perfect Storm and have the villain's last name be Clooney, like the actor who played one of the characters from the movie. Storm Clooney? or rather Storm Loony? Although I am not too much into a villain whose name is simply "Storm" it is a lot better than anything that I can think of.
Climate Control isn't a great pun. It is also very nice that you are not including the words "super" "mario" and "world" in the title. It is a giant boost of creativity. It is also a bad habit to kick.
Magmarock could also use the pattern similar to MMX after you beat Storm Eagle's stage and land in Flame Mammoth's stage. You could actually have the door to the boss open when Mario goes in and out of a pipe and the stage freezes. He can go on the frost and then grab the key and unlock the door. It could also provide for some interesting boss battles.
As for the story, I'll have to use some of my brainpower that I gave to Buu Huu in a PM. I will leave a good storyline to you also.

First off, I really like your choice of graphics, especially the shade on the water and general design.
Second - good, different story idea.
Third, I look forward to playing this. Good luck!

Holy cow I just had an awesome idea that you could use. In the magmarock cavern, the end of one of the levels could have you freezing the area and when you go back onto the overworld, the following events who show the cavern freezing over. You'd need to use 2 palettes for the lava half and two palettes for the frozen side. That would be a pretty interesting idea for you.

I had the same idea, although it would use some difficult palette swaps...

The story isn't really about four spirits, like Fire, Water, Plant, and Wind, It's more about, well... Crazy weather, or something. But I assure you, the story will have a few plot turns I've planned... (Evil look)

I see I have competition for storyline-helping.
The hack looks great so far. I like the new graphics and the "shadow" water effect. I also like that others have followed my example and created a hack with a complex and twisted plot. 'Course, I'm not exactly sure if that was what he was inspired by, but I'm always a big fan of intricate and developed plots, and if anyone needs storyline help, just ask me (not to draw people away from Mericles's advice, mind you).

Reading as your name is known around here(besides might I nudge you as to the fact that you said you would be leaving after getting all of SMI II squared away unless it becomes a trilogy), I may have tons of ideas that I die everyday just to share them with people and am more of an idealist than creator, you can have the floor. I am just a 21 year old nerd, who doesn't even think that some of them will get accepted. I also love lengthy games.
Crazy weather is fine, I just was thinking too hard about FFI since even the beginning had the same conceptual ideas. I guess that ST will be the elemental priest of the SMW hacking ideas. BTW to me it has always been earth, fire, water, and wind. I would love to see those plot-twists.
Maybe a world becomes inaccessible later on so you can't go back. Perhaps you can find a boat, or a way, to make it go back by a secret very hard level. I love surprises and big bonuses(optional bosses, new worlds) than a sound test, yes I am very picky and hard to please.
Back to Reading(the other person with a Tails avatar): I didn't know that you were the story-teller of this little hootenanny. I figured that since it was open and free I might as well present the best of the market. All of it is free, though, just I need a credit, a character, or an enemy dedicated to me(most likely an enemy because I haven't done a hack at all, so I seem like a hypocrite).
Yeah, it does look great, and unusual. It also looks very natural, like it could be a cartoon but it feels fresh. From what I've read, Reading, your hacks do serve a little bit more than a small boat. You, my friend, are a celebrity here, even The Dark Depths is on SMWWiki, maybe that Falls stage will be on the site also.
You also have taken advantage of the two player feature. I even watched a Youtube of a level that looked very fun, but very big. Did you get nervous hearing about the epic-ness of your levels?
I am also a big fan of intricate plots. I guess that I blindsided one Trader because I bumped a post to increase the author's awareness of a potential project. I am pretty bad at doing that kind of stuff.
Perhaps we should PM, Reading. What other ideas are in that bushy-eared head of yours?
Edit: I have noticed, that except for one stretched screen, that your lay-out is incomplete Reading. Do you notice it also?

Yes, I do plan on leaving sometime soon, since I'm retired from ROM Hacking now and SMI2 concludes the saga (thus, there's no possibility of there being an SMI3), but I've been thinking, since a lot of people would want me to stay, maybe I should just hang around here, but not make any more hacks.

It was me who wrote the Dark Depths article. Just letting you know.

Maybe a little, but I'm glad that many people enjoy epic levels like those.

The website I run with some of my friends (see the SMWiki page about me), titled The Hidden Scepter, is where I put my ideas to good use. You can see them there.
Originally posted by MericlesEdit: I have noticed, that except for one stretched screen, that your lay-out is incomplete Reading. Do you notice it also?
When the tables are stretched, my layout doesn't expand due the fact that it has to be divided into nine sections; the extra post space seperates the right side of my post from the right side of the post field because of the images used on the right side of my layout. If I made them wider, they'd overlap the middle section of my layout, so my layout is incomplete when the post field is stretched.
Is that what you're talking about? For me, certain images of the layout don't show up every so often (for some reason), so maybe that was it.

Sorry boss, I'll reply to Reading with a PM. I do think that Reading will prove useful at suggesting ideas to the hack though. He could help edit a few of the rough bumps should any of my ideas tumble and fall, since he has more experience at making these things.

Well, I'm a bit in a pickle here. I don't know weither to keep the SMB3 music, change to SMB1 music, or revert back to good ol' SMW tunes
One reason I want to have SMW music is so I can add some different themes to my levels via custom music. How would I have a swamp world without a dark, slow music? How about a climb through the foothills? I don't think SMB3 or SMB1 has anything to offer for that.
But, I have my conflicts. SMW music is a bit unfitting for my graphics scheme, and also having designed them after more advanced sounding themes, they ultimately don't fit at all, custom or not.
So you've heard what I had to say, but I think I'll use SMW music after all.

Well, it's your hack, so I say do whatever you feel is best.
Also, SNN said that he is going to be working on all of the SMB1-3 songs for custom music use over the next several weeks. That option would be to not commit yourself to just the SMB1 or SMB3 music patch, but just using custom music later when more is available. That way, you get the best of all worlds - SMB1 music, SMB3 music, or any kind of music you want.

It's settled. I've made up my mind and decided to go with... SMB1 music!
Andy, you're right. I should wait for more options before decide to take the leap, as for the sequel... I'm not sure. I shouldn't think that far.
Now lets get back to what this thread was created for!
-------------------
I've created a new "subworld" for the hack. After each world is a subworld: a few levels that transition from one world to another. One example is Seaside Isle in the IPS. I think it gives the player a break from each big world that him or her beats.
Name: Pine Foothills
Location: Above Magmarock Cavern, next to Rattlethorn Wetland.
Difficulty: 5/10
A small wooded cliff off the side of Rattlethorn Wetland is home to many Koopas, Spinys, and goombas alike. It also features a vast canopy of pine trees; hence it's name. But sadly, after the uncontrollable rod spread its powers across the peaceful landscape, the pines soon grew to unbelieveable sizes. Some turning lethal and angry in the process.
Basically, the pine trees grew long roots that attack Mario. I'll use an ExGFX file to edit the wooden spike sprite, which is supposed to be the roots that "attack" Mario, just like Whispy Woods in TRSP2.
(Screen Shots coming soon to a moniter near you.)

Well I do love the creativity going on. Pine Foothills sounds very good, if you can do it AS. Boing, as I can recall AS did declare that he is probably going to use SMBI though he is a little bit concerned about using it.

Naw, I'm pretty sure about using SMB1 music since S.N.N. is trying to make it custom music compatible. (I think)

Well, initializing your ROM for custom music opens it up to nearly 40 new songs, so you should have room for more than just SMB1.

Well, let the music contest begin. How about a few tunes from Oracle of Seasons? Perhaps the SOM Boss theme for a few trips?
If indeed, SMBI won't fit it all(though I would expect AS to possibly want all of it only SMBI tunes) then there must be some ideas on how to fill up the holes. I also believe that with the graphics structure and the adventurous depth of the hack, I think, it might be useful to explore beyond SMBI for a few tunes like Andy says.
It also seems like 40 is quite a big number.
I wonder what AS will have in mind. Either all SMBI(possibly including forgetting the newer spaces or filling them in with repeats of the music) or half SMBI and half all kinds of stuff. Speaking of that, it would be great to have a tune or two from SMBII.
