Tip: Linear levels aren't necessarily a bad thing. After all, most official Mario levels are fairly linear.

As we all know, the Mario series has existed for a very long time!
But, perhaps, there is a bunch of you that are wearied by the same, overused, hackneyed, obvious story used over and over and over and overandoverandoverandover and over again (y'know, where Princess Peach gets captured by King Koopa) in certain Mario games.
Give me your opinions about the ever-repeating story as I did with mine.
They're Mario games, i personally don't think they need a super-heavy plot. They're pretty fun, and that plot always works.
I'm okay with Peach getting kidnapped by Bowser in the platformers, since the developers mainly focus on the gameplay, but I like the fact that they sometimes vary it up, such as in Super Princess Peach and Super Paper Mario.

Really, it's a plot that always works, but it always feels great when they change it up or breathe some fresh air into it.
Didn't I already see a thread like this? Heck, I'll even quote my own post.

If you want a different story, play any spin-off, any RPG besides Paper Mario, or play Yoshi's Island or Super Mario Bros. 2.

But as others have said, Mario doesn't need a story to be fun. Sure Super Mario World didn't have a story but I put it as my 4th favorite game anyway because the gameplay more than makes up for it. I don't need a story to entertain me in SMW or SMB3 or SM64 because the spot-on gameplay does it for me.
Err... Not all the games are all-based on this storyline. In SMRPG it starts like this, but Bowser turns into your friend to help you to defeat Smithy. In YI, baby Luigi was kidnapped by Kamek. SMK, I don't have to comment. I'm not sure about the other ones, but would be odd if Nintendo persisted with the SMW storyline away.

If they did, this doesn't matter. The story doesn't affect the games at all.

Some games only really need context. It's good to know why Mario's stomping koopa heads, and that's why the excuse plot exists. The plot isn't the "point," it's just a (minor) supporting factor.
But why use the same lacklusterous plot? Even since the amazing Super Paper Mario (Which I believe to be the zenith of all Mario games). You see I believe the princess is an very neat character! Going into many events and whatnot in The Mushroom World. But seeing her get kidnapped over and over makes her pretty worthless (In which I do NOT want her to become). That is for the reason my possible future game will force you to play as the lovely princess!
Super Princess Peach, US Super Mario Bros 2., Super Smash Bros. Melee/Brawl, and any Mario sports game all have Peach shown being as capable as Mario/Luigi/Bowser. The first two are both platformers and before you say SMB2US is just a reskin of Doki Doki Panic it doesn't matter because it's a platformer with Peach as a hero so shut up.

That's not how you spell Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door.

Sorry friend, Princess Peach has and ALWAYS will be nothing more than a plot device. The only times she's been shown to be competent are in SMB2 (which was a dream), Super Mario RPG (made by Square), and the Smash Brother series. (which are spin-offs). I guess Super Princess Peach is the only game where she actually does something (this is very unlikely to happen again).

The reason Mario Bros. follow a simple plot storyline is because they don't really have to make one. As long as the platforming and gameplay is solid, there will be profit for Nintendo.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Mario games focus on gameplay, not plot. The plot is left vague enough to where the developers are free to put whatever they feel like in the game without it conflicting with the story at all.
But I STILL feel the urge to tell Nintendo to do something with the plot! Peach, as of this generation, has possibly became nothing more than a statue of merit! Getting dragged closer to a dragon god as the octopus god dose the same, fighting over the statue who represents their might to their side, with no thought, it lasts forever. You see, I don't believe others appreciate this princess, and this saddens me.
I once own a game called Super Princess Peach, as I was only interested in its levels. I liked it a first, but then I dread upon it for its "girlyness" at a earlier age. I decided to forsaken it in a bin of junk bestowed in a basement because of this. But, then there was the day, the basement was to be cleaned. My mother ordered my brother to throw away any junk left untouched to tidy up, that particular game was part of it. And so I never saw the game again. I was fine then...but then my thoughts on playing as the princess, ...I knew to that day my true reason was for my likings to her. Thus, gave me that "Why did I let it get thrown away???" frustration.
To this day, whenever there is a chance I can can play as Peach, I play as her, for I believe that she is an awesome character, not an plot device.

...Have you even read anything posted in this thread?
I think Peach has been getting a fair amount of use these days. Heck, she was arguably the most useful party member in Super Paper Mario (which is great and also on par with TTYD okay). Not to mention Super Mario RPG and SMB2, and who could forget Super Princess Peach (awesome game, by the way). She even showed some Princess Magic in one of the Mario & Luigi RPGs, though I don't remember which one exactly.

And I agree with you, Plato, Peach is a great character! I always like playing as her, and I definitely don't see her as a plot device.
Mega Man. That is all.

That one was made by falconpunch, and was more him complaining about the story rather than starting discussion.

I wholeheartedly agree, and am also sad that there aren't going to be any more Mega Man games, now that Keiji Inafune was fired from Capcom.

So yeah, my view on games is that either there should be a great story and decent gameplay, or great gameplay and either a good story or no story. This goes for all franchises.
Inafume was banished from Capcom? Never knew... But I suppose that marks the end of the copy 'n' paste Mega Man series.
By the way, I was once in fond of the series, but by looking at it now, its extreme similarties isn't fun anymore as it is unoriginal. The only good thing about it to this day and beyond is its splendid music.

If you're going to judge the Mega Man series (the original series, not x, legends, etc.) then you probably want to focus on the first three, and maybe the fourth. Even Capcom wasn't going to release number 6 but had to because some of the robots were designed by Nintendo Power readers. While admittedly the only Mega Man game I find tolerable is Mega Man 3, pretty much the first four games define the entire series. And yes, the music is absolutely fantastic.
