Welcome back to the 4th annual SMWCI competition. For those of you who don't know what SMWCI is, let me explain:
EDIT: We're going to rework the system from the ground up, as people have been asking for a different method of approach to the competition.
Originally posted by AtmaSMWCI is a music porting competition held on Central usually during the summer. Each SMWCI so far has been different in it's method of critique. This year is different however, as we will be taking the method of SMWCI3 and using it here. If you don't know SMWCI3 was a head to head single elimination competition. Need a visual? Here is last year's bracket after all rounds were completed.
Now, there will be some changes, 1: rounds will be based on # of prelim entries.
8-12 entries = 3 rounds (8 people)
13-16 entries = 4 rounds, 4 awarded byes (12 people)
17-32 entries = 4 rounds (16 people)
33+ entries = 4 rounds, 8 awarded byes (24 people)
The 2nd major change will be the round criteria: Each round will give each side a similar task. but those tasks will not be the same as they were last year.
The final change is the prize payout: I am investing 100 USD into this competition's prize payout. I am unsure how this money will be split, and how I will use it for prizes (most likely steam games though)
With that said, the starting date for SMWCI4 is Saturday, June 2nd. The rounds will be X weeks long, where X is the # of weeks (less than 3) that earns the majority of votes.

So...you're using the same system that I hated so much last time that it prevented me from participating, without even any discussion in the forums or IRC about how it should be done. Wonderful. Have fun, guys, I guess I'm skipping this year as well.

So for people who plan on joining this: The point system
I was going to still do a 20 point system with .5 intervals with 3 judges. I was going to simply divide it 10 and 10 between

However, if the community wishes for me to alter this point system, I will take suggestions under consideration.

I'm kind of in imamelia's boat. I liked the system last year, but I really think I'd like to see it done differently this year.
Perhaps we can use this thread as a discussion for how it should be handled instead of making it the real thing, and once we have an idea that we all agree on, we can start it up?

Okay, we can try to do it differently this year. So any ideas you have, please tell us.
Also, Welcome Hadron to the judging team!

If that's the case, I'd say maybe do what we did a few years ago where you could choose which round you participate in.
Then I say instead of having judges this year, we add a twist and have the users vote on the ports (as long as they meet the criteria of round) with judges deciding any tiebreakers.
At the end of the day, we port for the general userbase. Surely they'd logically be the best for input.

I wanted to do this originally, but my fear of bias stopped me. I don't really believe we should have the porter remain unknown either. However, if people want to try it, we can most certainly try it.

i personally support having it be anonymous combined with the judges deciding tie breakers between community votes. its possible there will be bias sure, but a way to compensate, judges do a good job at grading the scales, so maybe the community votes could be a separate part of the grading scale like community favorite something/something points?

does this count
... But yes, I think voting should partially be anonymously voted amongst the users. We could still have judges to provide constructive feedback and distribute points in their own category.. though I'm afraid of the new system becoming over-complicated.

Having the users vote is a solid idea, as it ultimately prevents bias AND offers a wider range of opinions. As every good statistician knows, the higher the sample size, the more accurate the results will be.
As for feedback .. I don't know. Maybe the entrants could feedback each others' work?

I'd like to join but I have two questions.
- Can I use addmusicM for all my ports? I port only for AMM because it doesn't have too many limitations regarding echo and I love using its special commands.
- I need to compose or remix something? I can't do that and if it requires composing/remixing I'll probably won't join :/

If it works properly (read echo delay), then yes.

There is always a chance of a remix needing to be done, however, nobody will be forced to compose for a round (though if available, they can)

why not just have the contestants stay anon (but have a list of who is participating) and submit their entries privately to atma?
you could compile all the entries and a voting form into a .zip file, have users vote on it, then send it back to atma so the total results can be calculated, with judges getting the final say on tiebreakers.

Actually liking lameness's solution after all.

So what exactly was wrong with last years system? To me it seems far more professional than just willy nilly joining in all over the place in whatever round you want.
I support Nameless' idea but it still doesn't stop people from going "LOL I ported this, vote for me yo' " to their friends...
