Yeah but you can do that during C3 too. Eventually you get found out though.

So are there any objections to the userbase voting? If not we can go about Idol like that. I would like to mention that if we go through with this plan, it would be strictly forbidden to reveal your port before the round is over. I would also still want at least 1-2 other judges to critique and resolve tiebreakers.

Oh, I agree with you on that. I think it was a good system, but at the same time, it led to extreme bias. I don't know what it is about the music guys on this site, but a lot of them always try to one-up each other at everything, so the amount of bias it leads to is staggering.
Which brings me to your next point...

That's why we do what Nameless and others have suggested - have ONE person compile the ports together, edit out any sort of info that could give away their ID, and then post the ports under anonymous names (eg. A.spc, B.spc, C.spc, etc). Which port belongs to who could be revealed after voting has taken place.
It's a simple and effective system that will allow everyone to take part in a totally unbiased vote as opposed to a panel of 2-3 people who could, despite what they may say, subconsciously initiate bias on an entry.
I'm all for it personally, and I bet people like imamelia would appreciate this method more as well.

What if someone, recognizing his port, mentions to everyone else that d.spc is his?

How would you know if he/she pm'ed n00b's to have them vote them?
I know this is nitpick-ish, but you never know...

Admins can read people's PMs. SNN or someone could just check the outboxes of the contestants before voting is finalised.

... you act like they can't use other methods to contact people. .-.
I honestly don't think there's a definite way to pick out cheaters, though it would be highly discouraged (and would most likely result in disqualification). The most we could do is keep the SPCs anonymous and hope for the best.
I'd be willing to compile the SPCs. I can remove all SPC tag information, and set each song to play for 10 minutes.

That system sounds fine to me. (I suppose I'd have to change the echo buffer start address of my SPCs before submitting them, too....)
Why 10 minutes for each SPC? All you'd really need to do is set them to play for about long enough to loop twice. Nobody has a tendency to make ports or compositions of a certain length (as far as I know).
Also, do we have any plans for how many rounds we'll do? I suppose that depends on how we do the judging, but since 8 rounds for SMWCI2 was too long and 4 (or however many it was) for SMWCI3 was reasonable, I think 3-5 would be a good amount. At least one round should allow the entrants a choice between one of two more specifications, though (for example, "make either an 8-bit remix of something from a SNES game or a 16-bit remix of something from an NES game" or "compose either a piece in A minor and 12/8 time or one in E flat major and 3/4 time").

10 minutes was a random suggestion, because you never know how long someone may port a song for.. but yeah, I can also just give each song a listen and loop it after two times (That's usually what I do with my ports, anyways). I like the idea with alternative choices, though we should specify which one we're doing upon submitting the ports to SMWCI3.
3 and 5 rounds both sound pretty brutal, but I think I'd love to have a 4-round Idol this year. Builds suspense, which gets people excited.
... Then again, I wouldn't know. I haven't actually participated in a single Idol to date!
