As part of the initial steps of introducing a calendar on SMW Central, I have added a birthdate field to the "Edit Profile" page. It doesn't do anything yet, but eventually it will be used for birthday notifications. I would like to encourage everyone to update it with your correct birthdate. If you don't feel comfortable in doing so, that is also fine; It's entirely optional.

Also cool that year is optional but I can still put the date.

So I played around with it a bit, and I found that if you set an invalid date, such as February 31, it just unsets itself without any indication of this happening. You did handle leap days correctly, though, so that's good (i.e., February 29 is only valid if the selected year is a leap year). You are able to select dates that fall in the future, however, so you may wish to look into that or else people could have negative ages.

Can't wait for the obligatory birthday based rankset someone will surely make I hope.
If not I will do so anyway!

With birthday notifications you mean like a table on the bottom of the main page saying "today is birthday of users X and Y"? If so, I like this idea.
And do you pretend to put an age table in the profile pages?

Hey, pretty cool addition there! I also like that the year is optional. Will the age appear for users who put the year or something?

Yeah, this is a very cool addition. Also, maybe it's good to put the age below the "From:" at the sample post thingy.

I disagree with this. I consider age in SMWC something to people notice in the birthday (example: whoa I'm 18). Plus, the sample post thingy is too filled of stuff already, and make it bigger doesn't sound a good idea for me. I prefer to leave it as it is (or maybe make this optional?).

Indeed, but I said putting this below the "From:" form instead of at the sample post, also, I don't think that's too much like having "Posts, Since, From and the Last Seen"...

Guys, please, don't discuss here.
The birthday thing is a good idea and the age can be just optional.
Many users here like to say their birthdays but not their ages.

I'm sure we're a community beyond being ageist.

I think it has less to do with ageism and more about people not feeling comfortable about giving out their age. This is a fairly safe community, but some people are likely afraid of the possibility of being stalked, harassed, or bullied in some way. It's why many of us use different e-mail accounts for here and for personal life.

Why not? Under the circumstances, discussion on this matter is both useful and pertinent. Please, do not try to end discussions in that way because it makes you look like an ass-hole.

Why can't you see someone's age in their bio?

Anyway, I like this new feature too. And I agree with Medic, displaying people's age in their bio seems like a neat idea.

I assume Kieran hasn't coded that part in yet.

Update coming later this week.
Also, the not filling in the year thing is actually unintentional. I am contemplating simply ignoring incomplete birthdates. I could provide an option allowing you to set whether you want your age and/or birthdate to be public.

Yup. This would be good for people who want to keep their date of birth hidden for various reasons.
edit: removed abbreviations, just in case.
