The whole point of Curiosity is for everyone in the world to chip away at one cube, until the center is reached, and the player sees what's inside. However, only one player can see what's inside, and only one player can ever buy the diamond chisel. The reason for the madness is basically the title of the game. That being said, it is utterly ridiculous, and whatever is in the center cannot be worth $77,000. I'd imagine that whoever finds it will show it to everyone in the world, anyway, so crippling yourself financially won't do any good.
Unless, of course, the chisel is actually free, and it'll go to the first person who is willing to purchase it for that much...

Doesn't it defeat the purpose then to explain your motive in an interview? Where any person who buys the diamond chisel knows it's solely for a social experiment?

This has to be some kind of sick joke. Seriously, nobody's going to waste $70000+ chipping away at a virtual cube for no apparent reward. There's a lot of guilt involved: Whoever forks over the money is going to be bombarded with trolls saying how they spent their salary on charity and living essentials. Of course, there will be the inevitable $70000 Child's Play drive done by angsty forum users. In the end whoever does buy the diamond chisel will probably end up being refunded out of sympathy.
I hope this is a free downloadable title, if this "game" is actually being made. If one of the staff leaks out the secret early, the experiment will be ruined, which will be even worse if they actually charge money for this game. It would be the ultimate corporate fantasy: People hand you unthinkable cash for as little effort as possible on your part. This is conspicuous consumption of the worst kind.
This whole thing reminds me of that $999.99 iPhone app, "I am rich". It consists of a single glowing red gemstone. Tapping the "information" button yields the following text:
i am rich
i deserv it
i am good
healthy &
successful
People who actually bought the app were refunded, and the app was removed from the store.
