"First extra bit"... what's this? [SOLVED!]

I downloaded a sprite which makes a sprigboard appear when there's no sprites on screen.
But, in every sprite, in the .asm file contains this "first extra bit" thing (if it uses or no).

What's this first extra bit? When I insert a sprite on my hack, I always put the extra bit on 2. The first extra bit (1) didn't work correctly (it inserts another sprite from original SMW).

In this springboard sprite which I mentioned, contains the following text:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
;; Portable spring board generator, by mikeyk
;;
;; Description: This sprite will turn into Portable spring board when all the enemies
;; on screen are killed.
;;
;; Uses first extra bit: YES
;; When the first extra bit is clear, the sprite will turn into a key.
;; When the first extra bit is set, it will turn into a keyhole.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I didn't understand this "clear/set" first extra bit, can someone explain me? I would like to appear a key/keyhole in one level of my hack also.

Thanks!

When it's 'clear' or 'no', you may use extra bit 2. When it's 'set' or 'yes', you may use 3.
Thank you Austin. I understand the usage now, but it didn't works with this sprite as I imagined. I guess someone took a part of this sprite, then edited it didn't and didn't remove this part from the key/keyhole. lol. It appeared the springboard and 1-UP.

You probably changed its code per accident?

Anyway, you can always try redownloading it. #w{=D}
The description is inaccurate. It looks to me that the sprite you downloaded is an almost exact copy of a sprite by mikeyk. Try inserting the original-- it's the key_gen.asm that's included with SpriteTool.
Thank you Zeldara109, it worked. :-)
