Tip: Make sure that ALL exit-enabled pipes, doors, etc. lead somewhere, or else they'll take you to level 0 (the "endless" bonus game).

So I recently got into Cave Story (Yes.. where have I been, right?) and I'm just wondering if there are ways to create some kind of save feature similar to the one in that game by saving the position within a level alongside things like coins and what kind of power-up you have at the time. (I'm sure I saw something similar to this within SMW last year sometime but I can't remember where)
Yes.
Yeah, definitely doable and I know of some people who have already made a patch like that (Lynnes comes to mind). I made a patch like that ages ago too, but I don't really have it anymore. When you hit a save block, you'd want it to save your power-status, coins, X/Y position within the level, level #, etc to SRAM. Load from that and store it to the corresponding RAM addresses when you die or whatever, I've never played Cave Story so I wouldn't know when exactly you'd want to load them. At least that's how I'd code such a feature.
Even SNN did something of similar in his Final Destination hack, in the 2010 C3.
One of the SRAM patches I believe just makes you add in some RAM addresses and it will save/load it automatically. You'll just have to trowel the ram map to figure out which ones you want to preserve, and use a block as Iceguy said.
Using a midway point as save position wouldn't be a bad idea, i think.

That's the thing! I was just wondering if there was a patch or block out that has this feature? Using a midway wouldn't be enough, as I plan on, in fact, creating a hack similar to Cave Story with just one big level and no overworld.
