I've been absent from this site for a very, very long time. I guess it's really only about a year but hey, that's nothing to laugh at when it comes to SMW hacking. LM 2.x is out, all kinds of crazy stuff's happened, and I've missed all of it. #w{:<}

I've got a few questions about the current standing of SMW hacking. Sorry if some of these are really basic, but I honestly don't trust the FAQ's content, knowing how out of date it can be. Anyway...
  1. I run a Mac as my primary computer. I dual-boot Linux as a sort of secondary OS if I need it. Is Wine still the only option for us non-Windows users?
  2. Has a reasonable YY-CHR replacement been developed yet? I saw something about such a thingy going on around here, and it'd be much appreciated. YY-CHR does not play nice with Wine.
  3. Has Asar finally replaced xkas as the primary assembler, or is xkas still required for some patches?
  4. What's the status of all the AddMusics? The whole crazy, "Let's fix all the music issues!" movement was still going on when I left, and I have no idea how it turned out.
  5. Now for something more advanced that I was just getting into when I left: what are the advantages of using manual block insertion instead of BTSD? Is there any good documentation on how doing the insertion works?

Once again, sorry for the somewhat obvious questions. This community is awesome, and I'm glad to be back!

I'll try to answer all the questions I can.

2. I'm pretty sure no replacement for YY-CHR has been made yet, sorry.

3. Asar has not fully replaced Xkas yet, but luckily you can use Asar and Xkas on the same ROM.

4. The music issues has been fixed. Basically, either use HuFlungDuu's one or AddMusic M.

That's all the questions I can answer. Hope I helped clear up what's been going on.

1: Nope, still LM+WINE. p4plus2 has mentioned making a cross-platform LM replacement, but I haven't heard of that one in the last couple of months. I'm not even sure if that Mac-patched LM is maintained or if it's still at 1.91 or whatever.
2: Not that I know of. p4plus2 has mentioned making an YY-CHR replacement as well, but I don't think that one is moving very quickly either.
3. No. I have a feeling Asar died somehow.
4. We've got two addmusics that both work with real SNESes, with varying feature sets (405 is generally considered easier, while M has some more features). A third one is being worked on by (guess)
p4plus2
, but I haven't seen any recent news on that either.
5. More control of what you're doing, and not needing to trudge through BTSD's unscriptable and barely comprehensible interface (in which order should reinsert all and save be done, how many times, and is there any way to reinsert just the changed blocks?).
Thanks for the replies, guys! :D Those are pretty much what I expected to hear, but how did Asar die? It seemed pretty darn good. Is there any way to keep using it personally, or are too many patches incompatible?
It's pretty rarely mentioned these days. It's not gone entirely, but at the current speed, it's not going to fulfil its purpose and replace xkas.
You're free to use Asar as much as you want on your ROMs; it's not going to break anything, not even if you use xkas and Asar on the same ROM. The only way to detect that a specific assembler has been used on a ROM is Asar's PROT command, which xkas is unable to detect.

Huh. That's too bad. It just seems odd, since the new Addmusics seem to have done pretty well, and with the attitude of "replace the old crud with brand new shiny things" mentality applying in other areas (see bsnes, Addmusic, music reorg), you would think it would extend to Asar as well. Oh well, whatever.

In other news, I've decided that I don't want to put up with YY-CHR's crap anymore. Bam. It's a thing.
The Addmusic push was due to them breaking on real hardware.
The music remoderation was due to many of them breaking on real hardware.
The bsnes push ... wait, was there ever one? I'm still seeing zsnes babble everywhere. Either way, if there was one, the only valid reason is to make sure stuff works on real hardware.

Those switches have one thing in common: compatibilty with real hardware. This argument is not applicable for xkas/Asar, which means the staff doesn't have any reason to push a change as hard as with Addmusic, and without staff pushes, I doubt it'll get the needed traction to take over.

There is still a slight hope, though; it's still undecided which assembler we'll want to push for the patch remoderation, which we want to do at some point. I don't think we want multiple kinds of patches (xkas, Asar, IPS) in that in that section when we're done.

I guess that does make sense. So, yeah. Either way, I'll be backing Asar, so you have at least one vote. #w{=P}
Yeah, once the patch remoderation does come up, if we're keeping only one kind of patch, why in the heck would we go with xkas over Asar? I know that wouldn't make me happy. Not only does xkas have a lot more bugs (even if most of them don't turn up very frequently), considering how often questions about finding freespace crop up, I would think it would actually be easier on new users to have only Asar patches to choose from.
