Works in Progress Forum Rules (Updated 2023/07/30)

Link Thread Closed
Welcome to the Works in Progress forum! The place to show off your SMW hacks that are... Well - a Work in Progress! Clue is in the name, hey?

About This Forum

This forum is a dedicated space for you to show off your SMW hacks in development. Hacks of any type, whether that's Standard, Kaizo, etc, are all welcome here, and these are denoted by thread tags.

The usual procedure here is that you make a thread for your hack, and use this throughout its development to post progress updates. However, we also have a Screenshots & Videos thread you can use, if you don't want to make a thread.

Forum Rules

1. If you make a thread, show some screenshots and/or videos.

It's important that if you're showing off your hack, you have something for people to look at. That could be screenshots, it could be videos - or both. This is what truly grabs peoples' attention. The emulator you're using likely has a built-in screenshot function. Once you've taken the screenshots, we recommend uploading these to your My Files section.

2. Don't create threads solely asking for people to join your team hack.

If you're interested in running a team hack, the best thing to do is start it as a solo-venture, show some progress and then as for others to join. If people have something to see, they're more likely to join. Threads created asking for people to join a team, with no other content, will be closed.

3. Don't announce or link to someone else's hack without their permission.

The best way to not break this rule is to let the hack author announce/show it off themselves. If they don't, then that's likely because they don't want to. If you want to discuss a specific hack, you're best to use the SMW Hacking Discussion forum instead.

4. If someone else is using an idea you or someone else had, leave them alone.

Don't stop someone else from using an idea in their hack just because you, or someone else, had the same idea. It's not worth the trouble just for a hack to have its "uniqueness". Please note, that there is a clear difference between someone using someone else's idea, and someone stealing content from someone else. If you see stolen content from others, then this should be reported.

5. When posting feedback, be constructive.

If you're going to give feedback about someone else's hack, please provide constructive comments. If you think something is bad, say why! Just saying "looks bad" doesn't help the author improve. Additionally, if you think something is good, say why you think it's good, too. Be respectful if providing negative feedback, otherwise you may become foul of site rules A1 to A3. This works the other way, as an author, too - be prepared to take constructive feedback. You don't have to listen to it, but other users are entitled to their opinions. The reason you're showing off the development of your hack is to gain feedback, so you should be prepared to accept but positive feedback as encouragement, and negative feedback to help you improve.

6. Respect hack authors working at their own pace.

Everyone's busy, and SMW hacking isn't a full time job, it's a hobby. People can work on their hacks as fast or slow as they want. Harassing authors about a hacks progress won't get them to work on it faster.

Thread Tags

When creating a tutorial in this forum, you should tag your thread appropriately to help users filter threads relevant to their interests. If your hack crossed between types, you can use more than one tag. The following tags are available to you in this forum:

Standard Hacks that are of the Standard type in development
Kaizo Hacks that are of the Kaizo type in development
Tool-Assisted Hacks that are of the Tool-Assisted type in development
Troll Hacks that are of the Troll type in development

Should you have a question about this forum, please feel free to PM one of the moderators of this forum (listed under the "Moderated by:" section on the Forum Index).

We also have the #smw-hacking and #showoff channels on our official SMW Central Discord server where you can show your hack progress too.
I'd like to announce that Rule 7 was added as of today, considering the recent incidents involving harassing hack authors about progress on their hacks. It will be enforced, so please read and take note of it or there will be consequences.

The rules have been updated to better reflect the current usage of the forum, along with formatting changes to bring it inline with more recent forum rule formats.
