Huge emphasis on supposedly in the title.

"By accounts of relatives of the victim, as well as friends of the family, the victim and the juvenile had a normal, loving, relationship and even shared the same bedroom," the sheriff's department said.
The gun belonged to Smothers, WBRZ reported. CNN affiliate WAFB reported that a man identifying himself as the boy's father also said the gun belongs to Smothers.
Although the boy initially told investigators that he accidentally shot the woman Thursday while playing with a firearm, the probe led authorities to believe he "intentionally shot Mrs. Smothers in the back of the head as she sat in her living room watching television," the sheriff's department statement said.

The grandma was 87.

My god.
It's a horrible incident indeed, but 8 year olds shouldn't have access to Grand Theft Auto, let alone easy to access to loaded guns.

Lots of people have played GTA at a young age, including me, and I haven't killed anyone.
Makes me wonder how can parents or guardians let them have access to these types of games. I have to agree with Eevee that I have played GTA but only recently and I have not killed anyone, let alone being an adult. Tragic indeed.
Also it's clear that this kid has some sort of mental condition which his parents don't know about. There is no other explanation for this sudden, extreme violence.

Oh look, a news service blaming video games for violent crime. Never seen that before...

Why the hell did this kid have access to a gun?

My thoughts exactly. Considering we have had news about a 13 year old muder his friend after play gears of war, I think we may see more of this.

That's the USA for you.

Thank god we've got yet another case that can be blamed on killergames *sarcasm*
I'm with FUGGNUTZ, keep your kids away from guns in the first place, and from video games beyond their age in second.

Kids today. This is a reason why little kids shouldn't be playing this kind of games. Someday, We'll be hearing this daily. But it's also the parent's fault, Where were they in the first place?
What's more worrying is the fact that the kid had easy, unimpeded access to a loaded gun. Fucking US.

Hmm, this is a pretty sad story, although it's kind of a mistake to blame video games entirely. Parents shouldn't be letting their kids play M-rated games - that's kind of why we have the ESRB rating things.

Although, re: GloriousWater, I must note that the average proponent of gun rights certainly doesn't support impressionable kids with no training to have access to guns - again, the blame lies with the parents and the parents alone.

Haha, yeah, the most telling thing here is all the "omg why was the kid playing grand theft auto" instead of "omg why did the kid have access to a gun."

If the kid really was so immature (even at age 8) to not know reality from fiction and shoot someone after playing GTA, then there are even more failings on the part of the parents.
There are three things that were wrong: letting the kid play an "M"-rated game, letting him play it freely (apparently), and mainly letting him play with a fucking true firegun at the age of 8 (and I still don't know why the fuck do the Americans need guns in their houses anyway). The game itself has no blame in the story, because it shouldn't be played by people who aren't mature (hence the "M") in the first place.

I'm really sorry for his grandma, and really concerned about how stupid some parents can be. You'll see they'll end up blaming the game for it, instead of who bought it to the kid.
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
I really don't get why people ALWAYS blame video games.
I've played GTA since I was like, 6 or 7. and I know several other people who have.

we've never killed anybody.(also note the fact, I've shot guns and have known about gun safety since I was really young)

and even if it was because of the game.
people need to stop leaving LOADED GUNS laying around with kids in the house.

Which would be themselves.

Well said, Koopster. In fact, I get the feeling the parents planned this.
Exhibit A: Letting an impressionable child play a violent game
Exhibit B: Placing a LOADED gun right next to said child
Just wait for Gran to come at an appropriate time and you've indirectly murdered someone and framed the game developers into the bargain.

Well, virtually everyone in favor of gun rights supports not leaving dangerous weapons unlocked and in the access of eight-year-olds.

All the people with unsecured and loaded guns in their houses are anti-gun rights, then...?

(Be careful with terms like "virtually all." Easy to shoot holes in them [haha gun pun])
Okay, a good portion of the gun rights supporters with brains.

wtf that's sick why would you even think that

Anyway, I don't see the point in blaming the killing on anything. Doing that usually causes unneeded tunnel vision on the situation that can criminalize something that might not be that major.
I've been playing GTA when I was 6 I didn't think "Gee whiz you know what would be some darn tootin fun? Killing People!"
