If you can afford, then go buy a PC that's right for you.

Or you could buy a new OS/upgrade pack which is probably far better value for money if your PC doesn't suck. It saves you having to backup files too since you can just manually delete the old OS while keeping all your old files.

I used to use Vista, now I use 8. I had some experience with XP, and I like the classic feel more than anything else. Maybe I'll buy a WinXP PC someday, but only for novelty or ROMhacking maybe, but not for Internet access. It is an okay and slightly fast OS, but I don't think it replaces newer OSs in any way. I'm actually kind of glad it's being dropped, since way too many businesses use it and they'll finally have to consider upgrading to something more present-day.
I don't really see how Microsoft is forcing anyone to change. I don't see anything that would prevent anyone from using it. I think it will still be usable, just not updated anymore.

For the last 15 years or so, Microsoft have been patching Windows XP regularly. This is to prevent any security holes from being exploited. Without these updates, Windows XP is a vulnerable operating system and a liability. You can continue to use XP in an isolated environment and it will be fine but as far as connecting to the internet is concerned, you have to update if you want security (no, antivirus software won't help you).

You could say antivirus software is a bullet-proof vest (well it will become pretty ineffective over time after updates stop) and updates disarm the weapon. Isolated environments are the way to go if XP is still being used.

I guess it is time to move on.
I think this decision of Microsoft is really bad. I mean, imagine if you had XP for something like 9 years, and now MS stops supporting XP. So, Microsoft is basically forcing you to buy Windows 7 or 8, and with that, they get a lot of money. Why couldn't MS just realease a free system update like Apple, or go in much less big steps. If you look at Apple, they just stick with OSX (version 10.x), and that means it is easier to update, and you don't have to buy a new OS. Why doesn't MS from now on release one big update to upgrade XP or Win7 to Windows 8, and just update the subversion (8.1, 8.2 etc.) They keep getting money from the products that people buy, and software. So why also force people to update? I just do not like it.

P.S. If you guessed that I am an Apple fan. you were right :3

Odds are that if you're running Windows XP, you're on an underpowered system with a 32-bit processor. Buying a new PC or laptop with Windows on it is no big deal because the majority of the cost of the OS is mitigated, meaning most of the price covers the hardware and any perks like tech support or Microsoft Office. On the surface, it seems like sticking to one OS would do Microsoft a lot of good, but the sheer number of different setups that can run Windows is so vast on top of having over 90% of the OS market share (which makes Windows the primary target for hacking, viruses, malware, etc.) that it practically necessitates these periodic upgrades. To be fair, though, Microsoft pretty much got everything right with Windows 7; the only real reason Windows 8 even came into the picture is to have easy cross-compatibility and a harmonized experience, both interface-wise and visually, across the different platforms that Microsoft now pervades (PCs, laptops, tablets, phones).

There's nothing wrong with that as long as you understand the differences between Windows and OSX on an informed level.

Apple drops support for devices after, like, 4 years. Microsoft does after 15. The company needs to make money to stay in business, and I happen to think that, if you've waited around for 15 years and you still have that old of a PC, you should probably upgrade to something more functional. It's not like MS really is greedy for money like Apple tends to be either. And, they do release free updates with new features and bug fixes for free - just look at Windows 8 that was updated into 8.1.

In your world:

- Microsoft support XP forever
- Everyone bought it 15 years ago so they have no need to buy another licence
- No sales, Microsoft lose money
- Eventually Microsoft start working at a loss
- Banked money lasts so long. Microsoft goes bankrupt

There's a good reason for updates, for both the consumer and Microsoft. Regarless. It's been almost 15 years. Are you still going to be wearing the same shirt you have on now in 15 years?

I love this - "Windows 8 is great guys! Trust us! Please?"

Ah well, my school updated to 7 at the end of last year. This doesn't affect me at all. Still, at the time XP was amazing, it's just that nowadays...

Ah well, my school updated to 7 at the end of last year. This doesn't affect me at all. Still, at the time XP was amazing, it's just that nowadays it's really outdated and insecure.
Just what I was thinking.
I hope that XP users will start switching over to W7, as XP is really outdated. W7 will become the new XP, anyways.

You CAN just wait for homebrewers to make their own updates (it's happened with 95, 98, ME, etc.) if you have XP. Personally, no matter what computer I use it on, XP runs better. XP also has a better UI that takes less clicks than 7 (Don't believe me? Compare XP's Start Menu to 7's Start Menu.)

No Mario, all toasters toast BREAD.
Or just get Ubuntu if your pc can't run Windows 7.
I love the classic Windows XP theme, so I just use a theme to make W7 look like XP.

They supported XP for 15 years. There's no point in supporting it for any longer, if you ask me.

Not exactly; this can depend on the websites you go to.

This was noted and it seems like it was caused by a faulty update. See these two pages: 1 | 2 .
