Hello, I'm trying to make a Pokemon Hack. I can edit graphics and other basic stuff, but I have a problem, I don't know where to start! I don't mean where to start hacking, I literally mean I don't know where to start. RPGs take much more planning than side scrollers, while you can get away with "winging it" and making things up as you go along, in an RPG, its obvious and makes the whole game seem sloppy. I need help thinking of a good adventure themed story, because I'm not so good with planning these things. If it helps, I'm trying to make a hack that is NOT Pokemon themed, and "Yoshimon" was already thrown aside because that has got to be my single worst idea ever...at the very least, can I have some brainstorming tips?
EDIT: Okay, how about this plot, I reuse the Bowser's Time Machine plot, but make an RPG version, where Mario has to travel through time. Is this a nice plot? Oh, but here's something that would make most Pokemon fans uncomfortable, there wouldn't be any pokeballs...is this still a nice idea? (Yes, I'm still going to make Bowser's Time Machine)

I'd like to get into New Super Mario Bros. Wii hacking. I'm not sure what to do, though...Reggie! looks easy enough to use once you've gotten it going, but that's the problem. It apparently requires level files and/or an ISO of the game...where am I supposed to get those? I have the game on a disc, but how do I put the necessary data onto my computer? And how do I play a hack once I've made one? I have no experience with the Homebrew Channel or whatever it is.

You're going to have to download it; as a form of copy protection Wii discs are specially made so they can only be read by an actual Wii (I've heard that one or two normal types of CD drives can read Wii discs, but that's mostly irrelevant). As for playing them...dunno. I've never done anything homebrew related.

All right, after a little hoop-jumping, I successfully get a NSMBWii ISO open in Reggie!. I take it you can't edit the world maps? And my question about playing the game still stands.

That is correct - the world maps are not as of yet editable.
EDIT: I really should do some research before I make stupid claims.

For editing the world maps:
The files CS_WX.arc files contain the maps.
You can use WII scrubber extract/insert files in your ISO
Use 'ShowMiiWads' to extract the files from the .arc files -Tools / Unpack U8 Archive
You should now have a model.brres from the .arc file, open the file in 'Brres Viewer'
Should look like this:

Extract the model to a MD5 model
Use 'Blender' to open the file -use the 'md5importer' script
Now it is possible to view and change stuff.
As for inserting the model back into the brres file, There are programs
that work for SSBB and Mario Kart, but they don't properly read/create the NSMBW headers.
For playing hacked WII ISOs:
Emulation-
You can use 'Dolphin' to emulate real GC/WII games on your computer, you need at least a Dual core 2.0GHz for NSMBW.
The real thing-
If you don't have a hacked WII, 'google' installing WII homebrew channel -smash stack worked on my 4.3U WII. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK.
If you have a hacked WII, install the USB loader, connect a external HD into USB port 2(the bottom one) on the WII.
Start the loader, it will look for device, it will ask you to format it if its the first time doing this.
Once this is done, you can rip your own WII games to the HD -legally.
Connecting the HD to a computer:
Dissconect the external HD, Connect it to your computer, use a utility that reads a WBFS formatted HD.
Now you can copy your own ripped games from the HD, and copy your hacked WII ISOs to the external hard drive.
Plug the HD into the WII again, select cheats if you want, and have fun playing your hacks.

Well, I got up to downloading the brres viewer, but I couldn't find a good link...and if there isn't a program that can insert the data back in correctly, what's the point?

Hmm...well, setting up the real thing sounds awfully complicated, but Dolphin only barely runs on this computer (dual-core, 2.13 GHz). I'll try emulation first before I worry about the Homebrew Channel, I guess.

I just started using SMILE and I am a complete n00b at it. I am attempting to make a Kaizo hack of Super Metroid, so I was fox hearted enough to put a Yapping Maw in Crocomire's room and when I went to test the room, it froze (apparently the other enemy caused the crash), and this might sound stupid, but how do you delete enemies? Other questions I have:
-I edited the shaft in Crateria leading to old Brinstar and for some reason the graphics in that room as well as in subsequent rooms somehow turned all glitchy. What do I do about that?
-Is there a way to edit the title screen? I can't find it in the graphics editor. Found it and used yy-chr.
-Also, what is meant by enemy DNA (in the species editor?)
-Also, I found a HUGE glitch. It will not save anything if I input values in the door editor. It is definitely impossible and I know that for a fact. Nevermind, figured that one out.

Hi. I posted a thread on this earlier but I think by putting it on such a widely used thread I can reach more people. I am trying to add extra characers to my sonic 1 hack but have them use separate mappings/PLC's to allow for more flexibility. However doing it on my own ended in failure and there is not a single guide on the Internet about this. Would somebody please give me a detailed guide on how to do what I want to do? I am using SonMapEd, Hivebrains disassembly and have already saved each artwork/mappings/PLC .asm files seperately. Thank you to anyone who can get me an answer as soon as possible.

If you want to do that, then you should find the source code for the game (all.log?) and look up each address. Find what address the levels are stored in and edit the ASM there. That's probably complicated, though, so I would look up a Toad's Tool tutorial to see if you can add objects or something.

This may be a n00bish question, but in Super Metroid, is there a way to set off the Tourian escape timer with one of other bosses besides Mother Brain, like, maybe Ridley, or would it be much too complicated for someone who's not had much experience with S.M.I.L.E.?

I have a question about the DKCRE. Is there a way to change what order to play the levels in or the level names themselves within the game? I opened the Configuration settings and changed the level order and names in the document, but it only changed those things within the level editing program, not within the game itself.

If you still need help with this you can try asking here. I don't know the answer to your other question either :/. Sorry.

Actually something else came up that's more important (I'm not sure I care that much about editing level names or level order). When I try to edit Coral Capers, I place an object or enemy and it's not there in game (the readme warned me about it. Something to do with vertical camera scripts). I wonder if there's a way around it.
If all else fails, I can make the player exit the level upon entering, since I'd rather settle for that than an unedited level or blatant level edit.

I didn't want to create a new thread for this question, so... is there a program to expand GB ROMs? (If there's not, there's always a hex editor...) also, what is the maximum size a GB ROM can be? The ROM I would like to expand is 512KB. Can it be larger than this?
