[Yoshi's Island Hack] Yoshi's Castle Escape

For the past few months, I have been working on a one-level Yoshi's Island hack. This was originally intended to be my entry for the YI level design contest, but I decided to polish it up and give it an "official" release.

With that said, I present to you Yoshi's Castle Escape. This hack is (very loosely) based off of the visual-novel/puzzle game, 999. You don't need to have played the game to understand this hack, but if you have, then even better! (The game is definitely worth checking out if you haven't played it, btw)

The core mechanic of this hack is choosing between multiple paths. Basically, you're trapped in a castle and you're faced with several doors to choose from. Each of the doors leads to a locked area, and the only way to proceed is by solving a puzzle to find the key. The goal is to find the number 9 door and escape, which can only be achieved by going through the correct combination of doors. Additionally, the path you choose affects your final score. All of the wrong paths will lead to a "bad ending" where it is impossible to get a 100%. There are a few hints placed around the level to guide you to the right path, but you'll still likely end up playing the level a few times before getting it right.

This is a very long level. If you're going for 100%, it can take hours to beat, and that isn't an exaggeration either. I highly recommend giving yourself a savestate at each of the midpoints, just in case you start to feel too burnt-out and want to take a break from playing.

Here are some screenshots:

Lastly, I just want to say that I really enjoyed making this hack. One of my goals for this hack was to come up with new and creative puzzles that have never been explored before in a Yoshi's Island hack. This hack took a lot of planning and experimentation to get it to turn out the way I wanted, but overall I think it paid off. I hope you too will have as much fun playing this as I did making it! c:
(Though if you aren't a fan of puzzles I can't guarantee that you'll enjoy this, heh)

Just popping in to say that I actually tested this level during the YILDC, and yes, it's by far the longest YI level I've ever played. Even without 100%ing it, it took me hours to get through it. I thought it was a horrible idea to submit it for the contest and I advised him against it, but seeing it get its own release as a hack in itself is excellent. The individual puzzles/design/palettes are incredible, and if you enjoy that sort of thing, you'll love this.

(don't be afraid to give yourself midways using save states though.)
disclaimer: the soundtrack is in fact not 3d land in yi, nor does it contain a famitracker version.

btw it looks nice but why is yoshi breaking out of shawshank prison
I like how this looks, I don't usually have the patience to play these type of hacks, but maybe I'll give it a try.

Also... where's my updated yi addmusic.
i probably wont play through it because i dont usually play a hack for that long a time but i am very happy that this is a 999 reference
Very very very shortly, this drab, workaday world and everything in it will be changed forever! Follow us into the golden country, into the empire of the senseless!

I can confirm that this is a 100% accurate statement.

Loving the changes since last revision, by the way. Great level and, if I haven't said it enough yet, great job with the music!

Yeah, this level will require a lot of patience, not gonna lie. But you don't have to play the entire level all at once. It's perfectly cool to just play it at your own pace. (Though, how you decide to play my hack is ultimately up to you; I'm just offering my own suggestions, haha)

Also, I have just finished posting solutions for each of the puzzle rooms. Though I strongly encourage trying out the puzzles yourself before referring to them. (Also, these don't tell you which doors you need to pick in order to get a 100%--you still need to figure that out on your own :P)

Oh that reminds me, I forgot to post an SPC of the song I ported for this level:

999 - Morphogenetic Sorrow

Enjoy!
This really looks like an interesting concept. You said it would take hours to figure out the right path. Call me intrigued. This is how 1 level hacks should be made

Longest YI level eh? Didn't think it could get any longer than the GYR series or NYI's Secret 6. I must check this out.

Funnily enough, I actually took some inspiration from the GYR series for the "one-level hack" concept, heh. Glad to see people expressing interest in this!
