This is an annoying problem. Hurting blocks on Layer 2 are quite a common thing, and it's not possible to disable this patch in certain levels. Perhaps you could add a bit table of levels to disable this patch on?

- Mario will not have a rescue cloud if the sprite slots are full, or sometimes when riding a brown line-guided lift.

This is another fairly annoying problem. If there isn't a rescue cloud for the player to use, the whole idea of the patch is rendered somewhat useless -- you're supposed to be giving players a fair shot at the level again if they die. You can fall back on $1861, which is a reserved sprite index used by ? blocks and the item box.

Furthermore, during the death animation, the game isn't "paused." You should always pause the game when the player isn't really able to move, like when obtaining a powerup or when scrolling the screen.

There are also a couple of inefficiencies in the code -- PM me for more details if you'd like to know.
