Because so many people here have taken interest in the vertical danmaku shmup series Touhou, Reimu has planned a competition and shared the details with me. The details are as follows:
Categories
Embodiment of Scarlet Devil - top score
Perfect Cherry Blossom - top score
Imperishable Night - top score
EoSD/PCB/IN - top score (accumulative)
Rules - Revised May 17, 2008
EoSD: Normal, Reimu A
PCB: Normal, Reimu A
IN: Normal, Reimu/Yukari team, Final B (vs. Kaguya)
-Each person will have until June 14 to play through any of these games until s/he gets a score s/he is satisfied with. Then, they s/he post a link to the relevant replay (.RPY) which will be reviewed by either me or Reimu for verification. The replay is more important than posting the score, since it is proof of your claim.
-You may only post one replay per game. Any thereafter will be considered invalid. (In other words, one EoSD replay, one PCB replay, one IN replay. Your first is your last, and you can not change. Editing your post will be considered suspicious, so that is discouraged. If you switch a link to your replay with an updated one, you will be disqualified. It is okay to post a mirror link to a replay as long as it is exactly the same, hence the word mirror.)
-Posting a link to someone else's Touhou replay will result in immediate disqualification.
-Screenshots do not count as substitutes for replays.
-You do not need to sign up - as long as you have a replay to show and can get it in before the deadline, you can participate. All that being said, even if you never played Touhou before, you may still enter the contest and have some time to adapt to the game and get a decent score.
-No exceptions to these rules.
Edit: Since using a continue interferes with your final score and disables you from making a replay, videos are not considered valid replacements for replays.
Rewards
To be announced.

I might join, but I'll have to see what kind of competition here is before I give it a go. I'm not really that good, even though I like Touhou a lot. I just play it sometimes for a break, while it's more the story and musical part of it all that has me fully addicted.
If the scores aren't too legendary all over, I'll join. ;p

If you are considering participating, please post in this thread. Though you don't have to, I just want to have a rough idea of numbers.
Oh, and feel free to ask anything about the competition.

When you say you must show a replay, do you mean posting it on youtube and putting a link to that youtube video? Cause I would like to enter but I don't know how to record anything on my computer.

If you don't use any continues (end the game when offered to continue) you get to save a replay file. These can be viewed in Touhou, so you just need a place to upload it. Size is usually 10-50 kB.

no, much much simpler.
just save a replay ingame (you do know how to right?) and then in the folder called "replay" you'll find your replay (they obviously are named according to the corresponding replay slot and game played like "th8_02.rpy" for an imperishable night replay saved in slot 2).
I hope that made sense (I fail at making sense at times...)... tell me if it didn't or you need further infomation... =o
EDIT: Highwind, stop beating me to the post or i will impale you... =P

So you dig for your replay in the replay folder, upload the replay somewhere and just post it?

Yes, that's correct.

So...
We have until June 14 to get a high score at:
QuotePCB: Normal, Reimu A
IN: Normal, Reimu/Yukari team, Final B (vs. Kaguya)
Can we choose another difficulty higher than the one that's specified, or do we only have to play Normal?

Have to play normal... Just so that the less advanced players still have a chance.

PCB and IN? Count me in. Though, I've never beaten them.

For "PCB/IN - top score (accumulative)", I have realised that Perfect Cherry Blossom will need a multiplier for it's score since the game naturally scores lower than Imperishable Night. Now, I will have to see how different they actually are... first estimate of what the multiplier will be is between ×2 and ×3... But due to my lack of proper data (well, I kind of skipped normal and only have one uncontinued clear of normal for both PCB and IN) I'll have to play through both a few times and ask a few friends about their scorecards before I can come up with a balanced multiplier.

I'm very disappointed you didn't include EoSD on this list. It was like, the only one I've actually mastered I suck at PCB.
But yea, stickied the thread. I'd like to try IN sometime before the deadline and see if I can actually do something out of it (lol at that thought)

But the lack of a visible hitbox is doom...
Though, it'd make more sense if EoSD was included, I guess...
I'll think about it and if I can't think of a good enough reason as to why not, then I'll get Kyoseron to add it to the list.
Also, all the rules and whatever won't change once May is over...
That should give me enough time to think of any possible problems or needed addition...

Can we choose what character we want to play with, or at least play with Reimu B in PCB? Her A is kinda weak.

Eh, using the highest scores from 東方Projectスコアボード</a> for the relevant team and attack types, I have calculated the multipliers as follows:
EoSD: ×15.00
PCB: × 2.15
IN: × 1.00
Also, Kagami, it's fixed as is so that the scoring opportunity is equal for everyone. In addition, It is ReimuA specifically because Reimu's attack in Imperishable night reflects that of ReimuA in the two prior games. The only reason it is Reimu+Yukari team instead of Reimy solo is because I guess not everyone has or knows how to unlock the solo teams and of those who know how to, they may not want to have to beat the game 8 times just to participate here.

The Homing Ice Cube seems to be a bit of a fan favorite, as it (and its predecessor) has been in service for nearly 15 years now. Just something I've noticed.

[imo] The lack of a visible hitbox is one of the best things in Touhou and shooters in general.

Eh, it's not so much the lack of a visible hitbox that messes me up in EoSD, I mean, I almost never look at where my hitbox is in PCB and IN, but something else which I am yet to identify seems to be what messes me up on it... I wish I knew what it was...
