Eh, might as well start a new thread here since the forums have been wiped. Anyway, here's my Yoshi's Island hack that I've been working on for nearly 9 months. Normally, I don't post screenshots until I'm done with a level but since the forums were wiped, I post screenshots regardless on how far I am from completing the current level.

Playing YI for DUMMIES

1-1: The Basics

1-2: Fun with Platforms

1-3: Beware of Nep-Enut

1-4: Burt's Forsaken Fort

1-5: Dinosaur's Best Friend

1-6: The Bat Cave

1-7: Spear Guy's Village

And now I present 1-8, the level I'm currently working on:

1-8: Salvo's Tower

Since this is a tower, it is a vertical level. Yoshi must climb the tower while avoiding walking cannons and other foes.

Be careful when riding the platform to the top. There are Blowhards waiting for you to appear.

Once you manage to get to the roof, Thunder Lakitu will ambush you. He knew you were coming because Kamek informed him. Make it to the other side of the roof while avoiding his attacks. The roof is pretty sturdy so don't worry too much about falling stone blocks.

That's pretty much it. Enjoy.

it looks very fun...continue your hard work, I hope the final product turns out very well...

I can't give you any advice though...

So, you got new screens of 1-8, eh? Very nice. I don't think I've seen a pure vertical level, so this will be a very nice change of pace. The top of the castle is nice, though I think the darker palette would look much more eerie for the top. If you still have a copy of my hack I lent you for beta, I used it in the second room of 6-8 with the interchanging blocks, so you could steal the palette from there.

Other then that, two thumbs up, as always.
O_O what u use for SMWYI hack ???

You mean what editor I used? I used Eggvine to hack YI.

Are you referring to the thing room?

If so, I wasn't planning on using background color 0 until 2-1. I've been using a day and night cycle all this time and 1-8 is currently in the late evening phase.
Oh .. never mind. I thought I used the black palette for the castle towers in that one. I wasn't referring to BG colour, I meant the colour of the BG castles themselves - I know there is a really dark and nifty looking palette in one of the original's levels, but I couldn't tell you which off the top of my head - though I keep wanting to say 2-8.
Well,it looks good:)
SS1. I like the night pallete :P
SS2. Nothing to say, but good.
3&4: Seem to be fun!
5~7: Nothing to say.
8: Is Spear Guy supposed to live in the sewers?
9~11: Great level design, in original YI there seems to be no vertical levels.
Hope the demo will be released soon.
Thx fabio :D
Hey, if you are good at making custom bosses, you should make a giant cannon! =)

The only level that I can think of is 4-8. It used some sort of darkish palette to go with the purple and blue foreground. I got a picture right here:

The Layer 2 part of the background is darker now but the Layer 3 part is still the same. That is how it was in 4-8. Do you think this is better than the original screenshot I made?

Not really, they live in a village outside of the sewers. They built their village there for no reason. The sewer is only the second half of the level.
Since you are looking for cunstructive critism,I would suggest changing the graphics. We have Ycompress, there is no excuse why it shouldent be used!

I am not saying YI's graphics are bad, but if you want to hack YI to its fullest potential, you will need to start editing graphics.

Not really. Sure, it's a bonus, but since there are so few YI hacks out there compared to SMW hacks, it really won't affect anything.

As for the screen .. it looks better, but it's not the palette I was thinking of. Hell, I don't even remember which palette it is now. I'll take a look for you ;P
I am aware that Ycompress exists but editing graphics isn't a priority on my right now. I'm more concerned about level design which is more important than graphics anyway.

SNN: Let me know when you do find that palette that you were talking about earlier through a PM. In the meantime, I'll just finish up designing the roof and the other section of the tower.
Bump, time for an update.

After being on such a long break from YI hacking, I finally got around to finishing 1-8. I'm only showing one screenshot because I don't want to reveal the second part of the tower.

Here's an edited version of the Salvo fight:

Added those red blocks that change colors as you hit them. Don't bother getting rid of all those blocks in attempt to kill Salvo because it can defy gravity. Also, it would just make the fight much harder.

The demo to this hack is coming really close. I will have an Extra Level playable along with the other 8 stages. Hopefully, I can release the demo by the end of the year although I can't really make any promises. >_>
cool, looking forward to trying it.

Ah...looks interesting, nice to see you working on this again.

But are you sure that edited version will work properly? You said that Salvo can defy gravity, so does that mean it won't fall in the lava? If it does that'd be a problem.

I remember I was trying to edit the Salvo boss in a similar way, by putting pits in the middle of the room. However, IIRC, after you hit Salvo with the last egg, Yoshi will starting moving toward Salvo automatically. That means Yoshi can just fall in one of those holes and die. You should test for that, I seem to remember that being an issue.

Well, sorry to be loading all these warnings on you at once, I just want to make sure everything is as glitch-free as possible before you release a demo.

Keep it up.

I've tested this fight a lot all day. When I tried destroying all those blocks on purpose, Yoshi did fall in the lava when Salvo was killed but I didn't die and I was still able to get points for beating the level.

However, when I fought him seriously for about 10+ times after that, most of my eggs rarely touched the blocks. On average, there were only 2-4 yellow blocks and the rest were still red at the end of the fight. Since there is so much room in the fight, most of the eggs rarely touch the ground which makes it hard for the glitch to occur.

I could add a second layer of red blocks below the first set making it almost impossible to have that glitch occur.
In the walking sequence after you beat the level, Yoshi will automatically walk to the middle of the screen. If there is any sort of gap in the floor, he'll fall right through, but you'll still beat the level.

I like the idea, but you might want to rearrange them a bit so that it would be impossible for the glitch to occur. You mentioned adding a second layer - what if the player thought you needed to destroy the blocks, and then beat Salvo anyway? You would have that glitch.

I'm sure you could get away with it if you kept it as it is, but if you want your hack to be perfect, you might have to shift those blocks away from the middle of the room.
