Hi everyone, and welcome to my thread about my upcoming SMW hack, Justice for Mario! This is probably my first serious hack that I've made, and it has been in development for YEARS, so I wouldn't want all that effort to go to waste.

As of now, I have already finished the 6 worlds. If progress goes smoothly I guess I could finish this hack before the end of this year.

Now, let's get to everyone's favorite part, PICTURES!

Misc. stuff:

This is the title screen for now, with a slightly edited version of the original level as a placeholder:

The story:

First level(aka replacement for Yoshi's House):

Main Overworld:

And now, the worlds:

World 1: Village Outskirts. A world with no specific theme, inspired by Yoshi's Island from the original SMW.

World 2: Tanooki Mountain. A mountain themed world, home of the first Switch Palace.

World 3: Tailspin Plains. A plant themed world, which sports the first Ghost House in the game.

World 4: Fusion Caverns. A world with ice levels, fire levels, and some that combine both themes.

World 5: Chilling Seas. A water themed world.

World 6: Racoon Forest. A forest themed world.

World 7: Top of the world. A sky themed world.

Well that's all for now. If you spot any mistake please let me know so that I can fix them.

My WIP hack
Why are there no comments so far. I can't believe this is your first hack, everything looks really well done. The main map looks quite, but there are some perspective errors and lines missing (but that's really nitpicky). The levels all seem to have solid level design. Some palletes could still use some work like the grassy castle. Also I think it would be a good idea to realease a small demo, as you can get a better view on the level design. Good luck and please don't cancel it because you put so much work into it.

--------------------
Check out my new hack thread:
Pretty much what the last user said. Looks fantastic, especially for a first hack, with some minor albeit noticeable perspective errors on the OW and what looks to be pretty competent level design.

This is just nitpicking, but it'll make your hack far more noticeable if you use more custom palettes. I'd recommend going back through all of your levels' palettes and researching colour theory and different shading techniques.

That slight edge in design can really give your levels that personal touch, and make them far more appealing to look at and play.

EDIT:
If you want some tips, there are many members here who are great at designing palettes whom I'm sure would be happy to help you. I happen to have had formal instruction in graphic design with a focus on colour theory in my past, so I should be a pretty good person to turn to for palette design. Other members with noteworthy skills include the likes of Underway and Gamma V.

I've become very grumpy these last few years, and have been biting my tongue here in SMWC's forums quite a bit. I just want to let you all know that if ever I come off as harsh, I still care about you all. You guys are great.

I'm really digging the palletes in this level, they look good for a first hack!
I could only wish I was capable of this when I first hacked this game. . . but that went awful.
Tons of cutoff and bad/ugly stuff and bad level design.

Have you considered working with any chocolate material? I.e. Sprites, blocks, music.

--------------------
Sometimes, I like to hack SMW. This is rare though, but I always try something new.

Well, didn't really expect to get such positive feedback(considering the fact that I think I can do better than this as far as aesthetics go). This is definitively a big morale boost.

Wow, you're flattering me :). Technically this is not my first hack (my first actual hack is utter shit compared to this), but this is probably the first time that I'm actually trying to finish one. I'll definitively try to release a demo soon, since I will really like some feedback on the level design. Also, could you tell me what other palettes need to be fixed?

Thanks a lot for the comment:). I'll definitively try go back to my previous levels and give them some better custom palettes.

Believe me, when I first started hacking SMW 4 or 5 years ago, I was pretty much shit.
Just look at these abominations:

What you see here is just the result of years of slowly learning, fixing, and getting better at hacking.

Also, I've definitively considered working with custom sprites and such, but if I ever do that, that would be after I finish this hack.

Well, we both definitely got somewhere. I definitely have undergone improvement. I went from using badly ripped Mario & Luigi (GBA) Mario sprites to just using SMW, much better idea.
Also, I think there could be a workaround for dirt tiles behind purple triangles: Just paste some of the dirt tile's pallete into the same pallete row as the purple triangle, then make a new tile in YY-CHR by coping the purple triangle and then trying to replicate the dirt tile in the empty parts of the purple triangle GFX tile, then insert it as ExGFX. Then, insert it as a Map16 tile with the same behaviour as a Purple Triangle.

Have you ever tried drawing custom tiles to create the illusion of having two tiles in one spot?

EDIT: Purple Triangle fused together with Dirt tile using some of the blank black squares in the color pallete row.

Surely, this can be used to defeat cutoff in certain situations! (I.E: Pipes planted directly inside of the ground, donut bridges connected to the highest level of solid ground, ropes connected to certain tiles, ETC!)

I haven't tried that yet, tough I guess I could try to later on to help with cutoff on my levels. Thanks for the advice!

You're very welcome, friend. The idea came to mind once I saw the purple triangle cutoff.
Using this, you could probably have ? blocks inside dirt tiles, given you know ExAnimation.

This is really good in my opinion. I love how SMW-ish it looks. I like everything you've shown here, except this, this, this, and lastly, this.
I dislike the first two, because the grass has no shading on it for some reason. Shouldn't be hard to fix.
The reason I dislike the third one is because the color getting cut-off. I know what you were trying to do, but it just doesn't look good to me. I think you should just seperate it and make them two different islands.
The last one... it's actually really good, and probably I'm just nitpicking, (so feel free to ignore this one) but instead of using the same corner tile, I think you should use other ones. Interesting landshapes look nice.

Also, I LOVE that story. Very original and nice. #lm{pal}#lm{pal}#lm{pal}#lm{pal}#lm{pal}

This is just my opinion, but I disagree. I think Super Mario World-ish or just Super Mario World palettes are nice, and they make a hack feel like SMW. If you're going for a Super Mario World-ish feel, I don't see anything wrong with it. Though, it's true that fancy palettes make your hack far more noticeable.

Thank you very much for comment. Do these look better know?

Also, I went back to some of my levels and gave them new palettes, and was very pleased with the results:

And finally,I was able to finish world 5, so here are more pictures from it:

That's all for now. Again, if you see any mistakes, please make a comment so that I can fix it, stay tuned!

I do quite like these new palettes. One thing though...

I don't know about this one. The dirt just doesn't seem to have enough colour variation. Just brighten up your highlights there, and you should be good to go, though. Also, loving the subtle red-green contrast here.

Well, its time for a new update I guess.

First things first, I fixed the palette on this level:

Also, I've been working on World 6 for the past week, and already have half of the levels done, so I'm ready to show some pictures:

And finally, I will soon start working on tweaking the hack so that I can release a demo of it. It will probably be 4-5 worlds long, so I hope you like it! As always please comment on any mistakes you encounter, see you next time!

Oh, I love the map and the 3rd and 5th screnshot. 2 also is quite nice, but I don't think there is enough contrast in the palette.
Just minor stuff, though. Otherwise, these are very neat stuff.

Wow, these look magnificent. I really like the slightly altered palettes. There is something that could be improved in the first screenshot though. The clouds have a very red outline and the sky is pretty sunsetty as well, so it would make sense for the bulk of the clouds to be something more like pink or orange. It looks pretty weird with the almost-white.

Check out Extra Mario World!

I tried to fix both background palettes. I hope they look better know.

Aside from this I havenīt worked on anything new since I have been mainly playtesting the hack to fix any mistakes I see and to add anything thatīs missing so that I could finally release a demo. Because of this Iīll instead show some unseen levels:

I hope you like them and as always please point out any mistakes you see. Demo is coming soon!

I really don't like this. The transparency doesn't really add anything new. If anything it just adds visual confusion since the foreground and background colors are pretty similar.

I've removed the transparency and now the level looks better. Thank you for your criticism.

In other news I've finally been able to finish tweaking the hack, and I'm now ready to show a demo of it. It can be downloaded here

I hope you enjoy it!

Actually, I like hacks with custom music.

Currently it doesn't have custom music, tough I still haven't decided wether I want it to have it or not.
