~~~IMPORTANT THREAD UPDATE~~~
no one comes here for a long time but still, I decided to remove a bunch of screenshots from my filebin to free space. They were way too much all over the place, and I only have kept the best ones.
I am super glad because the two removed romhacks made their way to the romhack databse.
Hello world.
As some can remember, it's been a while since I was hacking some SMW ROMs and advertised it off on SMWC.
As some can remember, I had two hacks submitted then removed
Removal log 1
Removal log 2
I have to say that the original ideas I had for this Super Zero World : Dream Quests were too big for me. I did not have the time to learn what I would learn, I did not find the resources I wanted, I did not have a clear list of what I would add to this hack. And over that I had OW issues that I could not fix.
So Super Zero World : Dream Quests is cancelled.
But I have made many levels so far and I want to share them with the community, and finally get my first accepted hack submission;
So I decided to go for a new project where I could add and correct all my old levels, so they can fit better to the rules (even the 2008 ones from the very first demo).
The level design is a bit tough, not for beginners, but also not a Kaizo Hack. I tried my best, this time, to render the gameplay more user-friendly and less unfair. Also, all the levels will contain some ExGFX/Music/Sprites/Blocks that I gathered on SMWC over time. Some things are so old that I don't even remember whose resource it is, so I hope my accreditation list will be comprehensive enough. Also I took some ExGFX on The V's Super Mario World Starlight Remix (2006), but I have seen he's not on SMWC any more... :/
Hm. I guess it is time for screenies now :
Upbeat level with Ninjis. These Ninjis are very vicious, I had trouble myself to beat the old level so I tried to use less Ninjis than before.
Classic coin hunt level. I had some feedback (removal log) about the fact I had no reset warp. It's fixed thing now. I like the palette I used.
Another level. Since it's not fully converted from one hack to another I only have one screenshot.
I'll try to keep you updated with new screens in the future, and I'll be off to a testing session once the Hack is over, this way I raise my chances to have my submission accepted. Any volunteers?
Thanks for reading this thread.
Hey it looks good so far.#tb{:D}
Although I think the level with Ninjis Background blends into the foreground so you might want to change its palette. But keep working on it!
The levels in the screenshots look alright. I think it's a good idea that you are (trying) to improve your levels from hacks that gotten rejected, because, well, you are improving some of your early works.
Mayrio > Thanks a lot! It is big work because my level design used to be a bit unfair and not player-friendly.
Yeah it looks good #smw{:TUP:} Also does the water in the background move? (just wondering)
Good!
In fact the water in the BG is ExAnimated with two frames and moves to the left, as a torrent would do ;)
Some news!
For those interesed, here are some more screenies.
My level "Underwater cave" updated, and now more elegant : "Underwater Grotto"
Part 1 :
Part 2 :
Also a level I had made years ago, totally redecorated : "Golden cave"
And another one, a coin hunt maze :
Underwater Grotto looks quite nice. Loving the graphics and palette. I think maybe the name would flow better as "Undersea Grotto" but it's up to you.
Golden Cave doesn't really feel like a cave. It looks to be quite an open level and seems to be built largely out of ropes rather than cave ground. I typically imagine cave levels as being more enclosed.
Thanks a lot K3fka for your visit!
BTW how do you do to have an avatar that changes every time page is refreshed.
Undersea Grotto is a very neat name!
Also I fixed a bit this "cave" that did not feel like a cave.
In fact, at the beginning, this level was intended to be an open-air cave related called Buzzy Beetle's gold mine... But yeah it's a bit better now that I removed this context gimmick.
I now want to introduce to all an important advance I made : I have an OverWorld!
It took me days to imagine how I could render something interesting. Here are some characteristics :
- I decided to divide it in many areas. There will be + or - 30 exits within 22-23 levels. I still have one or two levels to add.
- Since some levels are challenging; since there is no story; since there is only one boss (at the end); all the paths are already revealed so you can skip any level to go through the game.
- Still, the Yellow Switch Palace has to be beaten in order to beat one of the levels.
- I gave Big Dots a signification : they are taken by what I call "Trial levels" or "Ordeal levels" (don't know yet what fits best); this kind of level is very challenging and will automatically be rewarded by a save prompt.
And finally, media :
- A video to demonstrate how it will be (don't worry, I also plan to insert some music).
- A picture below (main OW only) :
Do you even perspective bro? All the land looks way tilted. You could also stand adding some colors and decorations.
allow shy guy emojis in post footers you cowards!
Hello Von Farenheit and thank you for your visit.
I didn't even think of perspective because all them pictures for the "perspective errors - goodbye!" tutorial are outdated and won't show anymore (one may want to fix that?! Where the hell is Teo17?) and I also thought I could do by myself without considering extra-accurate aesthetical details... In my opinion, I stayed consistent enough : that's something.
And... Actually this is my first complete OW, so I remain proud of it...
But! I will consider correcting this tilting phenomenon if it is THAT bothering... Don't know how to figure it out yet. Could you eventually point out my errors in detail and tell me why it's wrong?
About the colors... I don't think it is very necessary tbh, my levels already fit the OW schemes they're planned for.
Decorations? Maybe I will with some neat ExGFX. But I'm very afraid it could screw all my pathes on, like it did in my old project. Do you have a tip for preventing this to happen???
I'm now upset because your comment was a bit harsh, but I'll be fine.
The OW looks bland, I don`t know how to explain though, add more variety in terrain, dessert and grassland? Why not add something else like Snow?
Well, that how you learn to improve.
I guess so.
Okay for the decorations (only if I get an answer for a correct ExGFX implement).
But about terrains there's nothing more I can do. In this hack the Snow terrain has its consacred submap with correct palette; and there are no desert levels. And, grasslands, well I thought if it's green it seems like grasslands, but seemingly I was wrong.
Also please remember that this hack is not intended to be an ace. It just presents my old levels, so the OW does not have a need to be kickass imo.
Thanks for the feedback though, I'll do my best to mix up our opinions so everyone is satisfied, and then post again.
It's okay to keep the grasslands part, just replace the dessert/whatever it is with something else. And even, if the levels are bad, which shouldn't be, you should make the OW good, it gives the player an impression on the hack and its style.
Hmmm... Oh crap. I misunderstood your point. In fact you don't like my beach part.
It contains beach levels. I got inspired by many people here who use this brown/grey-ish color for beaches. Maybe I'll make it more yellow so everybody understands it's a beach.
What don't you like in that beach part? The way it is near the sea? The way it's a bit flat? Because it's intended : beaches are do not have hilly landscapes in general.
Waiting to hear from you.
Oh and I'm satisfied with this OW, I don't find it horrid. But yes, I can do a bit better, and I will try to. Also my levels have been re-worked entirely so they meet the submission guidelines so I'm not worried about them.
It's just the palettes, changing it to yellow would be better, and try your best at the OW.
Duhhhhhh, I feel so relieved now.
Yap. Changing to yellow will be done quickly and I'll try to come with something better overall, with decorations and stuff. Still I need to know what was wrong with the perspective issue.
Thanks for your comments.
The color of the small waves tiles that make up the ocean is wrong.
Hmmm okay. Thanks. Why is it wrong? It's not eye-pleasing or something, isn't it? Or is it a convention? I didn't know.
Any ways, I already have had this comment on the Screenshot showoff thread, so I replaced blue waves already with yellow waves, which are indeed nicer, see below :
Looks much better, keep it up! Why not show the other OW's too when you're done them too?
