Haha nah not really. There's no block duplication, plus I'm doing this with a cape.

Any other thoughts Sokoban? I'd love to hear what you think considering you're one of my main inspirations for kaizo hacking.

Other than that, there's a lot of super clever puzzles and tricks in this level. Really fun to watch. I'd love to see more of this kind of stuff.
The original Kaizo Mario series will always be the most aesthetically pleasing Kaizo hack.

As for all hacks/levels, I recommend checking out "Epic Nothing" for aesthetic ideas

Also Kaizo light technically (ahem) means that it is easier than the original Kaizo Mario series. The first stage is extremely clever but is in no way easy. I don't even know how to do the trampoline thing.

Thanks a lot MP, I'm glad you like it. As for your comment about the shell bouncing room, I won't remove the room entirely, but I will shorten it.

Hm, didn't know about the whole kaizo light thing, thanks for letting me know. Also, glad you like it.
Your first level is like an array of completely random gimmicks, but I don't find it a problem. I agree that in terms of difficulty, it's not "easy", since you seem to require glitches like the block duplication glitch, something not many players can do on their first try. I really like how there are clever tricks everywhere in the level, and nice usages of the layer swap glitch too! (Those screen scrolling pipes though...)

Not much to comment regarding the ghost house overall (flying and juggling an 1-up between teleport blocks has been done a lot, but eh)

Also welcome back!

Personally I'm afraid that the hack might be too easy, considering that I'm trying to be a A&D/MMD style hack, but I guess that depends on people's skill level.

I might scrap the ghost house part altogether since I didn't sketch that part out on paper beforehand. I've not seen the 1-up juggling thing done a lot in the manner I did it in, maybe I'm just not paying enough attention.

I'm really glad you like it. I honestly didn't expect to get the feedback I've been getting (I haven't gotten much but still).

In my personal opinion, stage 1 is kind of weak compared to what I plan the later stages to be, but I'm really glad you guys like it anyway.

I'll try to post an update next week if I have anything. In the meantime, does anyone have any suggestions for gimmicks I should use? I have a lot of ideas already, but I'm open to new ones.

EDIT:
Started working on the main OW. This map contains Yoshi's house, the first three main levels, and one of the secret puzzle levels.

Usually both series of the hacks you mentioned had their first levels be not that simple to go through and get even harder as they go on, and it sometimes depends on the amount of skill people have to get past levels like these. In your case, making most of this particular level more difficult than it is already is unnecessary, as long as the rest of the hack follows said pattern.

You could do something involving eating blocks or some of the custom sprites from the section (I have yet to see a level that is very apart from what we all do)

The map is decent enough. Just try to variate a bit regarding the corners of the cliffs and insert the vertical lines when needed.

Stage 1 won't get too much more difficult, but it will still be challenging.

I'll probably use the eating blocks in stage 2. As far as custom sprites go, this hack is gonna be pretty ASM heavy, so that won't be a problem.

Well its still a WIP, I'm not even done with the main OW anyway.
Good luck , you'll need that .
Looks great so far!

There's actually a hex edit to prevent this.

It looks nice so far, but I think the dots in the water looks kinda weird, since there's no waves around them. Also, there's too many lines on the walls.

As far as figuring out gimmicks, what I did for Banzai was I searched the patches, blocks, and sprites section for anything that sounded interesting and just tried it out. If it turns out to be an awful gimmick, just don't use it, but there's a lot of unused sprites and stuff that make for really unique and creative setups. Here's a suggestion - anti gravity. There's a patch for it I think. Don't forget that introducing too many concepts in one level can be overwhelming.

And yeah, Epic Nothing™ is the pinnacle of aesthetics in smw.

Little update: I'm scrapping the OW. I'm gonna make it look much fancier once I get the time. Probably gonna throw some ASM in there if I can, I am trying to make an aesthetically pleasing hack after all.

If I get time this weekend/If I feel like it, I'll work on Stage 2 and post screenshots of what I have. No guarantees though.
Well, I didn't work on Stage 2, but I did work on some other stuff.

Well first off there's this. ... yeah.

This is the beta/demo OW. This is temporary until I make all the overworlds look fancy and schtuff.

This is Yoshi's house, or should I say, Yoshi's old house. He moved out you see.

Time for some palettes!

This is the palette for stage 2. If you couldn't tell, its a layer 2 level. Some parts of Stage 2 have some Grown Man's Garden inspiration. I'm planning on having a bit involving two long rope mechanisms.

Here's the Stage 4 palette. Not much else to say about it.

For Stage 3, as far as the palette goes, I want to do something out of the ordinary (the ordinary being a blue FG and BG), but I can't decide on a palette, so I made two of them.

Which palette would you guys like to see me use? Or is there something you'd like me to do instead?

One other thing,

For the final boss, I'm thinking of having the player fight Pandora's Box itself. I'm gonna try to work together with somebody to code a crazy bullet-hell like boss such touhou, much wowhou. I'm considering using this background for the boss fight:

What do you guys think of this?

That's all for this week. The next time I post an update will probably be after spring break, but by then I'll have a ton of stuff to show off.

The palette looks pretty decent. I'm glad that grownman's irresponsibility has influenced even more of us.

The ground doesn't contrast much with the background, but the shade of brown you chose is good.

Definitely the first one, although I'd say the ground is kinda too green and could maybe use some more colors in there. It's all the same color of green. I could see the second one's background maybe working, but the blue foreground doesn't look that good. When you make your gradients, it seems like you use a darker shade and a lighter shade of the same exact color; if you mixed up some colors, you could make the palettes look even nicer. I really like the background of the first one though.

Oh yeah, and the boss background looks great.
I like the first one better but both can be substantially improved
The first one it is then! I'll tone down the green a little bit when I get the chance.

I agree completely #w{=3}. Gonna make some adjustments to the first one, and I might use the second BG palette elsewhere in the hack because I reeeeeally like it.

That isn't always true, but for this it certainly is. I'll mix them up a bit more from now on, but I like these palettes where they are.

Thanks, I think so too. I'm gonna wait and see what other people think before I make my decision to remove it or keep it.
Depending on what is going on in the boss fight (and as this is a kaizo hack I guess very much #tb{;)}) you might want to make the animated colours blend in with the background a bit more.
right now they are really attention seeking, which isn't bad as long as you don't to juggle shells or stuff like this.
Besides that I think the background is really nice.

Keep up the good work.

Woah, didn't expect to see you here. Long time no see NGB!

The screen is gonna be mostly gonna be filled by danmakus, but I still think it fits pretty well.
Free userbar if anybody wants it:

No updates at the moment, however now that spring break has begun, I'll have more time to work on the hack. Expect Stage 1 to be finished in about a week.
