What do you think of when you hear the above term? Do you think

A. A lot of concrete blocks¹. shelless blue Koopas, and P-Switches. It's not the most aesthetically pleasing.
Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeNI3sFHecA

B. ON/OFF switches, ON/OFF blocks (solid or not depending on switch status), and other ON/OFF related ASM. Somewhat more pleasing to the eye, but still has some room for improvement.
Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gRwTEbkVVM

C. ASM, custom GFX², more than just ON/OFF blocks and switches or none at all. Looks pretty good.
Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgY70bi5K2k

D. pipe mazes ftw

E. invisible P-Switch door hunting

F. other

¹ Vanilla-style or with non-rounded edges
² Well-drawn

...Or do you think of a combination of anything? Do you necessarily like what you think of? What would you LIKE to see, and what do you see frequently?
I just think of ghost houses with a bizarre, opaque secret to figure out with next to no hints.
ON/OFF block hunts and pipe mazes don't even register as puzzles in my head.

Your layout has been removed.
I think of JUMP's well-crafted and insanely elaborate puzzle levels like worldpeace's Bridge Engineering and Isocitration's Miscellaneous Monument. Also Starry Summit from this VLDC, it's almost a JUMP level honestly.
i have flashbacks to super demo world
G. Cutoff and glitch hell
I like to think of puzzle levels as levels that challenge the mind. Make you think hard about the solution to it. Makes you try over and over until you get the solution at last, giving you a sense of accomplishment.

Not a silly glitch fest that requires you to have knowledge of literally every known glitch in the game.

FINALLY

SOMEONE UNDERSTANDS MY PAIN
This certainly helps. I'm not making a puzzle hack for C3, but you'll see what it is

I played a puzzle level in Mario Maker. It was pretty good. 1138-0000-01E2-7A05.

Both genres have their audience, I for one love hacks like this. Super Foss World is an excellent example of this, same with the Super Puzzle World series and Opossumftw's puzzle hacks. These hacks aren't silly glitch fests, they require specific knowledge of in depth smw tricks and glitches, while requiring actual thought process and the same stuff most puzzle hacks require. These hacks have a huge audience in the speedrunner/tas community.

Of course, there's also hacks that are more on/off stuff but with clever item usage, like zraffleticket's smpp hacks, but smpp5 was more like a mix of C. and the "glitch fests" hacks.

If you want to make a truly really good quality puzzle hack, remember that a puzzle hack is good if it makes you think about the solution, and it requires intelligence and deep thinking first and foremost.
When i played 'My little puzzles' , all VIPs and JUMP i Start thinking'I hope after this my brain is not run out from my ' #lm{showprev}
But i like puzzles #tb{:D}

I can build levels, test your hacks, and sometimes fulfil ASM requests.

When I hear puzzle level I can't help but to be filled with despair...Usually it involves looking for item A (Usually a P Switch) bringing it at a specific location and finding item B bringing it to a specific location to find Item C- yeah you get the point. However if it's a Ghost house...then it's time to go in 1000 doors hoping one of them is the right way and magically be sent back to the beginning of the level.

Of course there are some good ones but generally not a fan of puzzle levels. They aren't much fun to play in 2D Mario games in my opinion...

Literally this. Seems like so few people in the SMW hacking world actually have a clue how to make a decent puzzle (and no, dragging the infamous blue switch/silver switch/springboard trifecta around is not a "puzzle"). I've been conditioned to fear the term at this point.
Glitch abuse and P-Switches

hi
So, from what I'm reading here:

DO

-Creative
-Require very mild glitch knowledge
-Require thinking
-Use things well

DON'T

-Make annoying levels
-Item-Babysit
-Make P-Switch labyrinths

Is this accurate? Should I add anything?

Yeah, pretty much!! Another thing I would keep in mind.. ASM use is encouraged, but make sure you explain the ASM gimmick thoroughly if you're going to use one for a level. This is because, puzzle levels often test your knowledge of Super Mario World gameplay. Since ASM introduces non-smw gameplays, players won't know what to do immediately.

A difficulty curve is also important, like in any hack. The first few levels should be pretty short and more simple, and save the complex puzzles for late game.
It's not a puzzle hack, but yeah. A good amount of ASM is going into this.

Yeah, pretty much. Most "puzzle levels" I've played lacked in creativity and involved too much item babysitting. As long as the puzzle is creative and involves some thinking, not too little, so that it's very obvious or too much, so that it takes a day to solve, it'll be fun. Also, like Gbreeze said, difficulty curve is very important when it comes to making an entire puzzle hack.
