Well, that was unexpected, and I don't mean the results but rather, the OWs itself.
Personally, I'm glad that apparently all maps got some well deserved attention and things were not completely overshadowed by "those" maps.

With all that said, let me put in some closing words for this.
1. I'll keep the maps anonymous for the people who DON'T want their names made public, if you however wish to announce yourself as the creator, feel free to do so
(and prepare to face my wrath if you claim something you didn't create)

2. In contrast to what I said in 1, I will say as much as that "those" maps, were done by a rather large group of people. Which on one hand I blame myself for, for I didn't state a group limit and on the other hand, I'm glad I didn't since we now have these never-before seen quality maps at our hands.
And to anybody complaining about how unfair it is as someone who doesn't know ASM to compete with people who code their own OW sprites amongst other ASM heavy things I tell you this... Do you think this isn't an insane amount of work? Coding one good OW sprite is already a matter of hours, coding so many... you can do the math.
3. I made this an individual map voting thing since some people expressed interest when it was mentioned the first time. Plus the fact that last year, we mixxed maps anyway. However, people complaining about the more severe restrictions this comes with plus the fact that a single map by a large group of people kinda owned everything makes me question the "need" of an OW contest for the VLDC in the first place.

So, these are my closing words, and I expect you to have already skipped ahead, so thanks for reading this anyway.

Oh shit, didn't expect to be sweeping shit this hard, I personally expected Best 1 and one of the cave maps to be a lot closer to our entry.
Not happy at all with the result for Worst, I voted for Worst 1 for that top tier delicious meme right there 👀 but I guess winning is okay and gives us the chance to actually do something better with our Worst map, the current thing has 0 effort except by Koopster, who made the landmass and nobody else did anything at all to that.

We actually worked on the map multiple hours every single day from start to finish, up to the last minute before the deadline, so making that thing was actually stressful as all get out. Don't want to hear anybody complaining about muh it's easy to make something with that many people.
Also fun fact because I'm self absorbed: I made 33 of the 43 different sprites made for the map #wario{;)}

Multiple people worked on each one. Medic and leodd did much of the asm. Lui did both maps (Haunted, Best, Ice, Sky/Space) and asm. Magi did abstract, as well as graphics. Gloomier did graphics as well. Much of the resort world was drawn by them. Worst is by Koopster, and was in fact the last one to be made. He also did a lot of the main map, as well as the cave map.

Overall it was a joint effort between all of them tho.

And yeah derpy didn't do shit #wario{>:|}
I expected Haunted #2 to win. It's sad it got so underrated compared to #6.

We didn't really separate work like that intentionally, but here's sorta how I remember it ending up:


General:

All parallax and wobbly HDMA by Lui, the gradients were implemented by him too but mostly MADE by the other folks.
Graphics were done by Magi, dax, Gloomier and to a much lesser degree me (I did a few sprites).

SNN actually did nothing but supply graphics from VLDC8 and do a ton of quality assurance (as in he spammed buttons on the rocket and the cart to find bugs and it worked multiple times).


Main Map:

All designs are by Koopster with adjustments by Gloomier afaik.

The world select pipe was coded by Lui with graphics by TRS and Gloomier and arrows by me.


Grass World:

Nice, leod, you made most of those cool OW sprites. Medic did a few as well, it seems.

The obvious winner was a HUGE collab? Wow. There needs to be a restriction how many people at a time can work on a map.

I really liked Worst 1. Wish that could've won.
Other than that and being honest, I wasn't sure I liked all the ultra hyper fancy ASM work there but it was obvious they put a lot of effort and in the end they did look awesome. Kudos :P

Glad to hear that, as it was honestly very underwhelming and felt like a regular map. I was even wondering if it had some sort of hidden joke I didn't get lol.

Worst (for the collab map) had the least priority. There was lots of discussion on it but things never came to fruition. Last minute I suggested just spam the lotus from the main map on it and call it a day lol.

Worst 1 would've been nice if the levels had some semblance of being worked into the joke, instead of being cramped into the first two panels. Voted Worst 3 just cuz I knew they'd make it like it was planned to be if it did win.

Glad the sexy maps won, nice job team :D proves the amazing things that can be accomplished in a short time when peeps work together.

Also disappointed worst 1 didn't win (and I'm guessing the big team ran out of time to work on the worst map), but I expect you guys can turn worst 3 into something really cool with some time.
Okay, now time for a proper post.

Congratulations for the all winners. The OWs are simply revolutionary. You guys found a new way to use sprites on the Overworld. I'm lying. Nintendo already done that: Bowser/boo/etc. You guys just had the idea to extend it to other sprites and hence why you all won this time. It just fits with the atmosphere perfectly.

Removing the sprites, the OWs itself are pretty good aesthetically too. I like the effects and overall design. Truly good quality. Thanks for making a such awesome pack.

I hope later with that we can make OWs more interesting overall, that is, more interactive, more animated than the past used to be.

I think it just shows the power of group work. Where are the "ASM complaints" now? The ASM is just a little part. ASM is an extension to all other things: graphics, music, design, etc. Sometimes I see people saying: "omg good asm oh no that's unfair" but they don't notice that a good ASM implies good in the rest, because the ASM usage is a complement of everything else together. Creativity and innovation is what makes us still alive today.

Either way, as I talked with Jack around one month ago, I will have to work a few things on OW regarding a certain features that would not be possible without killing windowing and layer 3, so additional to that I'm available to work on the Worst World and who knows a new Secret World (for who don't remember I coded did pretty much the entire last year's x world based on the bubbles graphics from Nimono), so yeah we might want to make this even better than VLDC8.

Don't forget about the extended level entrances. VLDC9 is gonna be the first SMW hack to have over 96 levels on the map and together with all these cool OWs will be certainly awesome to see later.

But don't forget about VLDC10. That should be the best VLDC ever, even more extravagant than this one. Why? Cause it's the 10th anniversary of this contest. Look at how it's evolved over the years. Ah, the memories...
