Super Zelda Bros. Demo

Hi guys. So I wanted to do at least something for one of these C3's.
Been in kind of a SMW hacking slump over the last year or so, but working on this short ass whatchacallit gave me back some SMW hacking joy. Hopefully, enough to continue more persistently than lately.

Anyway, not the most polished thing and definitely not lengthy by any means (three levels), but in case I get hit by a bus or contract syphilis (>implying I have any game) and die before next C3, I thought I'd release something.
Apologies for the halfassedness.

I know there's some 2D to 3D perspective eyefucks and I'm not particularly impressed with my sense of level design, so I don't expect you to be. That said, tell me anything I can work on, any suggestions, or whatever else. There's a shit ton of room for improvement so give it to me straight, doc.

Anyway, can Marink and Luinki save Mushrule Kingdumb before it's too late?
Will Face finish this hack before Bowzanon explodes the Netherworld?
Find out in this DOWNLOAD!

I must say, Mario does work quite well as Zelda, doesn't he? I was expecting it to look really off, but it doesn't.

I am liking the 2D/3D perspective there. I'd be neat if the enmies and the player also were in that perspective, but that'd be quite hard, I guess.

My only complaint, before I go into playing it later, would be the status bar of your castle level; 'Mario' looks a little off. Should be an easy fix, provided your level doesn't use any of the status bar palettes.

I'm intrigued - I'll be sure to check it out later and give a more informed opinion.

Unfortunately, I did have to dip into the status bar's palette to milk it for every color for one of the levels. #smw{^_^;}
I knew it was gonna bite me in the ass later and am still wondering what to do about it. I was thinking of just deleting Mario's name in the later more polished version since it's technically not quite actually Mario. :p

I've seen this project in the WIP thread in the past, and I liked the concept. You have a pretty simple plot, but it's very nice for a "crossover-esque" hack.

I'll give it a play, and once I'm done, I'll make another post here with a review.

Double-post. Whew!

As promised, a review of the provided demo.

You did pretty good levels considering you used 3D-styled tilesets for them... though I have to confess that I ran into a few unpleasing details. I mean, I particularly didn't quite like the placement of invisible coin question blocks in them. Music is... well, pretty fitting and nice sounding. I don't comment very much on ports because I tend to like more custom compositions, but eh, that's just the Blind Devil way of seeing (but wait, am I not blind?) things. Other thing that I'd like to see changed is Marink's and Luinki's palettes (especially Luinki, he has strange out of place pink pixels).

Nevertheless, the concept is pretty good and that's a nice start for the hack. Just make sure you revise these invisible block placements and you're good to go. And as a plus, perhaps including a few more Zelda features in castle/dungeon levels, like keys or even items?

Thanks for taking the time to play and review. I will take those critiques into account. I too, have thought about keys and items. I'd love to implement them once I figure out a means to have the asm done for that.

Another thing. To anyone who plays this, I advise you not to hold an item while crossing the goal tape. It spawns a mushroom and breaks the player graphics.
Had to find that one out the hard way, watching an LP. =(
