The Shantae series (UPDATE: News about Shantae and the Seven Sirens emerges from deep!)

C'mon, man! Who doesn't know about this series yet? Shush.
Alright, a new Shantae game came out last month! Woohoo! Have you just played this game yet? Basically, this is not your typical Metroidvania game series what it used to be. It started out as a lesser-known GBC game that's loved by a bunch of gaming enthusiasts alike. It later became popular when The Pirate's Curse was released in 2014. It was a huge success for these guys who worked with since the vgame series was praised with a bunch of good reviews and major upvotes.

If anyone knows about this game series, discuss, pleb.

Played Half Genie Hero recently, thought it okay. Not as good as Pirate's Curse.

The series as a whole is probably one of my favorites now. Fun gameplay, fun setting, skimpy outfits, excellent soundtracks, and feminism all rolled into one. Recommended (though I'd suggest new people start with Pirate's Curse since it's the most approachable).

Absolutely agree with this.

To me personally, the series has become a little bit stale with Half Genie Hero. It has done very little that's new, and the few things that actually ARE new are rather "meh". As for the things that aren't new, they're okay, but have already been done better in previous games. The humor is also getting kinda old and predictable in my opinion. While I still rather enjoyed it in the Pirate's Curse, in Half Genie Hero it only made me smile a little at best, though most of the time I simply saw the punchline coming miles ahead.

The Pirate's Curse, I feel, had brought some innovations in areas where it really mattered, such as improving the item management or reducing the amount of back-tracking by making the world denser and easier to traverse. It was a step forward from both of its predecessors. Half Genie Hero feels like a step back again in my opinion.

What's kinda shocking about this is that the game is really, really short, yet two of the chapters in the game are already stretch goals the Kickstarter campaign has reached. Like, if those stretch goals hadn't been reached, would the game be even shorter?

Nevertheless, it's still an okay game and does have its moments. It's just not the best game in the series, as I had hoped.

My current ranking looks like this:

-Shantae and the Pirate's Curse
-Shantae
-Shantae Half Genie Hero
-Shantae Risky's Revenge

I've never cared for the series, personally. I guess there's no real reason why I would like it, since I generally dislike Metroidvanias (Mega Man ZX aside) and sexualized characters, so a Metroidvania about a sexualized character probably isn't something I'd want. I have the first three games (sort of...for the first one, I just have the ROM and Virtual Console version). I never got very far on the original game, though I don't remember where exactly I left off (though I will say that it's a lot easier to play on an emulator than on the Virtual Console because of the moronic button mapping for GBC games). I got farthest on Risky's Revenge of any of them, because at least the world was relatively small in that one, but toward the end, I was losing patience.

Pirate's Curse...well, like an idiot, I got it for the 3DS around the time it came out, and I didn't even get to the world map before the game started ticking me off; if it wasn't the infuriating storyline, it was the first quest half consisting of backtracking. Once I actually did get to the main levels and had absolutely no clue where to go despite my best attempts, I basically said "screw this" and relocated the game to permanent shelf-warming duty (well...3DS hard drive space-warming?). As for Half-Genie Hero...I donated $5 to the Kickstarter just to support WayForward even if I wasn't planning on playing the game, then realized, wait, maybe I don't want to support a company whose most well-known character is that much of a sex symbol, but it was too late. I wish I could have that $5 back, frankly, and the $15 for Pirate's Curse too while we're at it. But hey, I've wasted larger sums on video games that I didn't like.

On a side note, that paragraph break pains me, but I just know that without one, people will whine about walls of text.

I'm working on a hack! Check it out here. Progress: 64/95 levels.

I mean is she tho? I'd get that argument if sex appeal is all the game had to offer, but it kind of undercuts the quality of the game itself if you chalk up its success to the main character being a woman. The first Tomb Raider games are shitty games that got big because the main character had giant tits and the gameplay was good enough to market. The people that actually know who Shantae is are the gamers that don't care either way, and just want to play a metroid-vania platformer.

Frankly, if you can look at these games and only focus on the sex appeal aspect, that sounds like your problem, not theirs. I'm not denying it isn't there, because it is I'm not an idiot. I'm just saying when you're looking at the glowing reviews the games get and when the player onscreen is so small compared to the beautiful world around her, you have to go out of your way to focus on her body as the main priority.
ask me if i give a f*ck...

It's almost like you're painting sex as a bad thing. And it doesn't matter anyway, whether she's a sex symbol or not—she still kicks ass either way.
I've only played Risky's Revenge, and while I enjoyed it at first, I found that the dungeons all felt the same. The graphics and music were pretty much identical in each, and the puzzles/platforming felt mediocre at best. The best parts of the game were the overworld areas - colorful, varied environments with a ton to explore.

The Pirate's Curse is supposed to be better, and I just picked it up in the recent Humble Bundle, so I might give that one a go.
I definitely recommend it. Risky's Revenge was my least favorite game in the series so far. It had a lot of "artifical" play time (that is, a lot of forced, unsatisfying back-tracking that felt like a waste of time rather than fun) and really had quite little content. Only three dungeons, if I remember correctly, and three transformations. Pirate's Curse is definitely better than that. It doesn't only have more content, but it's also better designed.

It's still not a perfect game, by any means. I feel like none of the Shantae games is as well designed as, say, any 2D Metroid game (especially the ones starting with Super Metroid). Whereas all back-tracking in Metroid games feels either natural or voluntary, most back-tracking in Shantae games is forced and feels like a cheap excuse to expand play time. I feel like they just haven't figured out yet what makes back-tracking fun in the first place and only use it to save resources. In that sense, Pirate's Curse definitely still has back-tracking like that, though what it does better than the other games is that the world is denser and easier to traverse, lessening the impact of back-tracking like that. Most of the game's back-tracking besides that is voluntary.

I recommend The Pirate's Curse too. I recently 100%ed the game and it was great, backtracking wasn't that much of a pain honestly. It's pretty easy to forget what you have to do sometimes though, especially when an npc tells you to get him this item, then he gives you that, which you have to give to that npc, who will give you another item, etc... And you really gotta pay attention because sometimes they don't repeat what you have to do. I had to look up on the internet for solutions a couple times myself.
Also play all the games because Jake Kaufman music is best music
Shantae's sex appeal is anything other than disrespectful (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex-positive_feminism). The series has quite a lot of feminist themes (the first one almost didn't get published solely because the developer insisted on having a female main character, as that was the entire point), and the skimpy outfits never detract from anything. Shantae's exactly the sort of role model I'd want for my daughter; strong and confident without being arrogant, unashamed of her femininity, and universally treating people with respect.

That said, I do understand that not everyone wants sexy things in everything, and that's fine. Different people have different tastes after all, and sexual themes are not somehow different than any other theme; some people like them, some people don't. It's cool either way. Problems arise when we DO start treating it differently than everything else.
lol how the hell I didn't notice this thread

Well, I beat Shantae TPC recently and as you can read I liked it very much. I couldn't say if it is the best game of the series, but it's definitely a enjoyable game. By the way, I haven't played Shantae 1/2 GH yet (I don't have money :( ) but as I can read it seems that it's not so good

Ranking of the games? Probably Shantae GBC and Shantae TPC are in a tie in first place, they have unique features that make each one special. Shantae RR was more like a graphically and musically updated Shantae, but it wasn't a bad game at all, just sometimes the game got a bit repetitive

But something that I like in the three games at the same time was the humor, sometimes very ironic and sometimes a little suggestive, but it was very funny (sometimes it got strange, not a big deal though)

and... Shantae sexist? Bitch please, Rottytops is hot as fuck, she is the real sexist

Well, 2017 has been a lucky year for our half-genie 'cuz...
  • she made her way to the legendary Nintendo Switch (Like, booyah!),
  • had her foe Risky Boots getting her FIRST solo adventure,
  • and of course, her friends--Rottytops, Sky and Bolo--go on an epic quest, well, to save her from dark magic.

Aaaww! Sweet stuff. I wanna see moar!

Anyways, discuss.

Personally, I didn't enjoy Half-Genie Hero too much, so I didn't even bother picking up the DLCs. The Pirate's Course still remains my favorite title in the series.

Half Genie Hero just reeks of having development problems. I dunno what happened but they took a long time to make a rather small amount of glued together content.

Methinks they promised too much on kickstarter.
To me, what's more shocking is the fact that some of the levels in the final game are already stretch goals. Don't even want to imagine how much more unfinished the game would have felt without them. Ultimately, my problem with it is how padded it feels. You're pretty much visiting each level at least twice with the most shameless and boring kind of backtracking. Like, sometimes it literally tells you "okay, so you've just been to this level, but before you can progress with the story, please visit this level again with some minor changes". "Good" forms of backtracking certainly exist, but this unfortunately isn't one of them. I mean, the entire series pretty much does this. All games had this to some extent. So far the best in this regard was The Pirate's Course, where the backtracking felt most "natural" and least tedious (it still wasn't perfect, but at least not too terrible). Shantae also wasn't too bad, its problem wasn't necessarily backtracking, but rather how tedious it could be to traverse the world and how long it took to get some good shortcuts. Risky's Revenge was probably the worst offender in this regard, the majority of the game is pretty much padding and it often sends you from one end of the world to the other, all while still managing to be an incredibly short game. Half-Genie Hero wasn't quite as bad as that, because it had more content overall, but the backtracking still felt more tedious than fun.

Just revealed, mate:

The game is set to be released on March 20th and its download size is 478MB. No wonder how many indie games (or Nindies, to be exact) will fit in Nintendo Switch's game list...
