BG4 status bar and message text? (Just an idea, not a request)

I was playing Yoshi's Island recently and I was wondering how its Layer 3 BGs don't disappear when a message pops up. I pressed the '4' key on my keyboard to disable Layer 4 (BTW I was using ZMZ), and the message text was disabled. Now I found out that the text is on Layer 4!

So how about this: a patch that turns the Layer 3 status bar and message text in SMW into BG4 stuff?! That way, our L3 backgrounds won't disappear!! Neat, huh?

But then Layer 4 will disappear :s

The message boxes are still layer 3. In fact, the reason why the messages can't be layer 4 is because in order to have four layers, all other layers (not just layer 3) must be 2bpp i.e. they only contain only three colours plus transparency. And with the exception of the room before Baby Bowser (which does use Mode 0 i.e. layer 4), this can't be case in Yoshi's Island since the tiles are too complex to be made out of only three colours.
I believe that the message box work with some kind of IRQ or HDMA so that the layer 3 stuff and message box text have got different positions and obviously, the message tiles won't overwrite the other layer 3 stuff but I can't verify that.
But how come the L3 disappears when a message pops up? Shouldn't it just come back when the message is exited?

You mean in SMW? That because of how it is coded. Being an early and a kind of rushed SNES game, it has got a couple weirdnesses in the programming.
In this case, messages simply clears out most of the layer 3 tilemap ("most" because the status bar is unaffected) without preserving and restoring it. The IRQ is also fixed outside of Morton, Roy and Ludwig (where there is a second one below them) and HDMA only exist in terms of windowing (the level and and circle and keyhole) but not in the position of the layers.
Oh, okay
