Have a look at this! I wonder if it would be practical to use in SMW... Bypass SMW's spc uploading code to use this instead and such. Of course sound effects might be a problem. On the other hand, if it were hacked to play a sample on a sound effect trigger, it might not be hard to include SEs as extra samples/instruments... We could even have voices that way perhaps... I donno. I will probobly look into it more one of these days.

Someone has got to figure this out as I can't get my head round it.

You'd have to rewrite everything on the 65816 end to be compatible with the new protocols, not to mention having to recreate music and samples with entirely new code. If someone wanted to add extensions so smw's spc driver they'd probably disassemble, hack it and reinsert it with it mostly intact.
Well I mostly thought it was neat because it included 65816 spc playing code. I was actualy sorta hopeing that since the SPC is like it's own CPU, I could just upload a new program there that could respond to commands just like the normal SMW one...
