IRC Dies, Discord Lives

As you might have heard people talk about recently, we are axing our official IRC channels in favor of the used-to-be-unofficial-but-now-official Discord Server that a few hundred of you have joined in the past already.
If you want to join the Discord, head on over to this page and follow the instructions:
SMWC Discord Info

This only means that we are going to place +m on all current official channels so that nobody can talk in them for the time being, before nuking them entirely in the future.
This does not mean that the Caffie IRC server itself is going to go down, there are no plans for this at the moment. It might happen in the future, but your custom channels are safe for the time being.

That's all!
can we just go back to icq i mean what is it with all of this new-fangled technolomajiggers
Is nuking the channels entirely in the future a wise option? I mean, Discord has the distinct disadvantage that it can be taken down at literally any time. (Specifically, when the company stops making money from it.)

A bit sensationalist, I know, but a fair point nonetheless.
I cannot believe IRC is fucking dead

But let's be real here for a second: Discord is beating IRC in soo many ways. I have no idea why so many people stuck to it for that long. I know that it had a bad reputation for quite some time but I think this drama has calmed down by now.

We own the server, we can do literally anything should the need arise. The old IRC page and all are being kept around as well, they're just not visible in the menu. It's all reversible in any worst case scenario.

That's a very good point.
Thank goodness.

We own the server

We not own the domain name or infrastructure of https://discordapp.com/. The ones who do can take down our, or any other, guild at any moment; all we can do is hope they don't.

With IRC, we rely only on ourselves, and the foundation of the internet.

We were talking about irc.caffie.net.

So I guess I'm probably going to be using the discord less then.

The reason I stopped hanging around the irc is because a huge chat with that many people can get incredibly hard to follow. The discord was already a bit fast but I think a flood of more people will make it practically unusable for me.

It's why I've pretty much only stuck to small servers with like 20 people tops in them.
I pretty much stopped using IRC for a while, so I guess it won't be a big deal for me. I'm really liking Discord a lot more anyway.

Eh, I think the spike in activity today was just situational. It's C3, and this change has just been announced (and a public invite was put in place). Not that many new people joined either, most of the activity from today was from users that were already there from what I've seen lol
It's easily the best thing I've done
So why the empty numb?
It's about time.
By the way, when did IRC's popularity start fading out?
Once the Discord was made usable by the banning of certain permabanned extreme shitposters, basically.

Why don't we get a relay bot, to connect IRC <-> Discord?

I found a bot that can do so: https://github.com/reactiflux/discord-irc
https://mariomods.net
Because having half of the chat messages come from the bot would get super annoying super fast.
And some formatting, such as color/strikethrough, is only available on one of IRC/Discord, so anyone trying that will confuse everyone on the other side.
And highlights work completely differently between IRC/Discord, which would be hard to translate sensibly.
And Discord users expect people to read the scrollback if they're offline for a while, but there is no scrollback on IRC.

It'd "work" if everyone's willing to adapt to it, but it'd give worse results than pure-Discord.

As far as I know, most of the pople who stick to IRC only do so because they prefer a "quieter" environment, anyways. If we were to just merge the two, I don't think many people would have a lot of reasons to stay on IRC in the first place, making the merger kinda pointless. Not to mention that it's more overhead maintaining two services rather than just one.
Feel free to visit my website/blog - it's updated rarely, but it looks pretty cool!
But what about !vb bot... and other useful bots.
I don't like this discord crap at all.
