I'm trying to play Sonic the Hedgehog hacks in Higan.

I found a web site with a bunch of ROM hacks of the old Sega Genesis Sonic games. So I got a hack, and I want to play it in Higan. (It plays Sega Genesis ROMs, too, not just SNES. It also plays NES ROMs, Game Boy Color ROMs, Game Boy Advance ROMs, as well as ROMs for a multitude of systems I've never heard of.)

But the thing is, the Sonic hack download comes with a .bin file. Well, what is that? What am I supposed to do with it? Is it a patch, like IPS or something that I have to apply to the original game? Whatever it is, it won't show up if I use Higan's "Load ROM File" option.

why would anyone use the non-snes higan cores

I think Genesis ROMs are usually .bin. Rename it to ... whatever higan expects (this probably shows up in the filetype menu), or set that menu to Show All Files, and see what happens.

I looked up what the file extension should be. I changed the extension to .smd, and now it's openable in Higan.

That .bin file was actually a ROM that was submitted to that website. That's definitely not a good thing to do. Should I take down my links because I'm linking to a web site that distributes ROMs?
